Good? Fandom is whatever you want it to be. And most people like shipping so I don't think most people will care. Unless you go around yelling that "GEN FIC IS CRAP! DOWN WITH PLATONIC RELATIONSHIPS!!!"

I personally view platonic relationships to be a form of shipping too.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't personally relate, being the exact opposite, but to each their own. :)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah I don't see a problem with this at all: a big chunk of fannish activity is creating/consuming what the source material didn't give you, right?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Ack my eyesight over the bright rainbow font!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps OP is making a point that they enjoy same sex pairings?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
It's still painful...

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Congratulations for being like 98% of people in fandom?

Nowhere more is it more apparent than with this secret that this comm is more correctly labelled fandom-opinions-i-maybe-once-heard-someone-disagree-with.

Right? Breaking story: I like cake because it's delicious, more news at 11...

Haha, that's okay, OP. I don't think you'll get a lot of flack for this (lots of people are SUPER invested in shipping) but I also know some people don't understand why shipping is such a large draw for others. Feeling that way is okay, too.

Having fun is what matters, so if shipping makes you happy embrace it.

I like fandom for reasons other than shipping, but I'm not going to lie either; the fandoms I get most excited about and involved in are the ones I have a well loved OTP in. (More-so when the pairing is popular, so I have plenty of fanworks to revel in.)

This would be me as well, like once I'm in the fandom other things will appeal to me too, but for the most part shipping draws me in and keeps me there. There are only a few fandoms where I got pulled in for non-shippy reasons.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Perfect picture is perfect!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Judging by 99% of my fandom, you are far from alone :-)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
This is me as well. I do enjoy other aspects of the story (plot, non-romantic themes, secondary characters, etc.) but shipping is always what draws me into a fandom, and what keeps me there. And actually, even when it comes to other things, like plot, shipping is a big part of my enjoyment. I want to see the characters (WHO ARE IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER) do plot stuff (TOGETHER). It always comes back to shipping.

I can see why you consider this a secret though. I think it's sort of an open secret throughout fandom: lots of people are in it for the shipping but not that many people come right out and say so because they're afraid people will think they're silly, immature, and that they're interests are shallow.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
It is shallow, silly, and immature to not care about anything that's non-shipping-related. Which is why it is so common for fans to be in it solely for the shipping -- most people on earth are silly, shallow, and immature. (Not that shipping itself is shallow/silly/immature, just this attitude towards it.)

You're not alone, OP. Though I personally don't mean that in a comforting way.

AYRT

It is shallow, silly, and immature to not care about anything that's non-shipping-related.

Well, I suppose if shipping is literally the only part of the story you give a damn about, that's a bit silly. However, neither OP nor I have said that shipping is all we care about - just that it's the linchpin of our fannish experience. Shipping is the fuel on the fire, but it's not the entire fire; there's still got to be some substance there. Furthermore, shipping itself potentially brings a fair amount of depth and complexity to the table. It is, after all, the exploration of love and desire. Let's not pretend those issues are inherently shallow; rather the opposite. Love and desire are only shallow, immature issues if the individual exploring said issues has a shallow, immature understanding of them. Which brings me back to you, anon!

Funnily enough, it's your attitude that strikes me as immature and shallow, in that you exhibit a clear inability to understand or accept the value of others opinions and experiences with regard to fandom. When I think of the many various ideas, dynamics, and situations I've had the pleasure of exploring through fanfic, it's honestly hilarious that there are people like you making snap judgments about what kind of fan and/or person I am, simply because I love shipping. As though

You know what, never mind, you're a dick; that's really all it's worth saying to you. I should've just skipped the rest, as I doubt you're capable of extending your mind beyond your own shallow preconceived notions anyhow.

This is a good post and you should be happy about it.

There are a lot of aspects of fanfic that make a fic good, but in the end, most of the fics I read, I start reading because of the pairing. The ones that aren't romance? Often one of the major draw points is still the combination of characters, as well as the plot.

(I have said it before and I will say it again, my top favourite fic is a genfic which is about the friendship that occurs between two characters while a major canon event happens.)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here OP! Just keep on shipping. :D
