This is me as well. I do enjoy other aspects of the story (plot, non-romantic themes, secondary characters, etc.) but shipping is always what draws me into a fandom, and what keeps me there. And actually, even when it comes to other things, like plot, shipping is a big part of my enjoyment. I want to see the characters (WHO ARE IN LOVE WITH EACH OTHER) do plot stuff (TOGETHER). It always comes back to shipping.

I can see why you consider this a secret though. I think it's sort of an open secret throughout fandom: lots of people are in it for the shipping but not that many people come right out and say so because they're afraid people will think they're silly, immature, and that they're interests are shallow.

It is shallow, silly, and immature to not care about anything that's non-shipping-related. Which is why it is so common for fans to be in it solely for the shipping -- most people on earth are silly, shallow, and immature. (Not that shipping itself is shallow/silly/immature, just this attitude towards it.)

You're not alone, OP. Though I personally don't mean that in a comforting way.

Well, I suppose if shipping is literally the only part of the story you give a damn about, that's a bit silly. However, neither OP nor I have said that shipping is all we care about - just that it's the linchpin of our fannish experience. Shipping is the fuel on the fire, but it's not the entire fire; there's still got to be some substance there. Furthermore, shipping itself potentially brings a fair amount of depth and complexity to the table. It is, after all, the exploration of love and desire. Let's not pretend those issues are inherently shallow; rather the opposite. Love and desire are only shallow, immature issues if the individual exploring said issues has a shallow, immature understanding of them. Which brings me back to you, anon!

Funnily enough, it's your attitude that strikes me as immature and shallow, in that you exhibit a clear inability to understand or accept the value of others opinions and experiences with regard to fandom. When I think of the many various ideas, dynamics, and situations I've had the pleasure of exploring through fanfic, it's honestly hilarious that there are people like you making snap judgments about what kind of fan and/or person I am, simply because I love shipping. As though

You know what, never mind, you're a dick; that's really all it's worth saying to you. I should've just skipped the rest, as I doubt you're capable of extending your mind beyond your own shallow preconceived notions anyhow.

This is a good post and you should be happy about it.

There are a lot of aspects of fanfic that make a fic good, but in the end, most of the fics I read, I start reading because of the pairing. The ones that aren't romance? Often one of the major draw points is still the combination of characters, as well as the plot.

(I have said it before and I will say it again, my top favourite fic is a genfic which is about the friendship that occurs between two characters while a major canon event happens.)
