I never notice stuff like that.

Do most people notice stuff like that? I don't think so...

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I notice stuff like that. You can tell a LOT about a person by their linguistic choices.

I live in terror that two of my online identities will one day be connected to each other based on my rigorous use of semicolons and the rhythm of my dialogue tags.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I am also rigorous with my semicolon usage, so maybe I will throw them off the scent.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I can absolutely tell anons apart by their linguistic choices, as well as their grammar and spelling. I'm mod of an anon meme so it's a useful skill to have, and one that I've deliberately practiced so I can get better at it.

I'm not always right, but surprisingly often. I gauge myself by guessing before checking the IP addresses.

The international nature of the internet makes it a lot easier as the differences are between whole different parts of the world with very different speech patterns, as well as the individual backgrounds and personalities.

Yeah, sure Case.

Yep. I can definitely tell if you are paying attention. People tend to use grammar patterns that are unique to them or they have a certain dialect where they choose certain words instead of others. You can tell their personality by the mood they convey. Sometimes they repeat the same stuff they find funny or clever.

Some people are very brief and some write a lot. Some don't put two spaces between paragraphs. Some.... overuse... ellipses. Some make the same spelling errors or use colour instead of color.

You can definitely tell.

For a while, I tried making my secrets more and more obvious. Dethtoll was the only user who caught on. It seems like most people don't care.

Oh, right, I vaguely recall that. And I think I only noticed 'cuz you're the only person here AFAIK who actually played Spiderweb Software games.

I have a similar worry, though it's not as much "will people figure out secret A and secret B have the same OP?" as it is "there are people I actually know who read this comm, will they know it's me?"

If it makes you feel any better, back when I still made secrets they almost all had the same font.

I...don't make that many secrets, but I do worry about my language patterns being recognizable across comments.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I once had three of my secrets posted on the same day, thanks to whatever complicated algorithm case uses to divide the secrets for the week. I had basically used the same font, and though the fandoms were different, when I saw it I was mortified because I thought for sure it was obvious that they were all mine. Especially since two of them were kind of (unintentionally) wanky. But no one said anything, so yeah?

I notice when people on the same threads are most likely the same person but trying to pretend to be multiple people. But if it's spread out, I definitely would not notice unless they used some weird phrase or insult that stuck out to me.

I've had multiple secrets post on the same day too! Not for quite a while I think, but I remember groaning and hiding my face in shame.

When I make secrets I try to switch things up, but I probably don't do all that convincing a job of it.

However, I feel like most people probably don't pay enough attention to even notice. (Some, but not most.)

I deliberately make non-instinctive word choices and avoid my idiosyncrasies just to confound this.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I sometimes use {US/UK} spellings to disguise the fact that I'm actually {UK/US}.

(Actually, I'm Canadian. But I like to mix things up :-)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Me too. I use US spelling mostly because that's the default here, so it stands out less.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a frequent poster on a certain anon meme, and I worry about the same thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same. The kinds of stuff I say and the use of apostrophes or ellipses.
Sometimes I feel like I can recognize other people by how they type or what they are saying, so I'm sure someone can also recognize me.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
That's why if I make a secret or if I'm posting anonymously and want to remain hidden I try to consciously change what I am typing.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
*gasp* It's YOU!

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Almost everyone thinks they are unique with language and almost everyone else thinks they are discerning enough to notice. Very few, on either side, actually are.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
ESL writers tend to be easier to spot, in my experience, and also those who don't have a good grasp on spelling. It's easier to deliberately write ungrammaticality than the other way around if you don't yet have the skills to do that.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to get outed on a kink meme because of my writing style, so I can see that happening to anons here too.
