Why do you write fanfic/create fanart? Or, if you don't anymore, why DID you?

habit and it's fun? i don't really know

I have ideas and it's the only way to get them out of my head.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-12 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Because I like having my ideas out on paper/in icons.

I write the stories I want to read. I post to get feedback on my writing and warm fuzzies when people comment.

I have lots of stories I want to write so I will prioritize which one gets written first by the likelihood of response (but I have a lot of finished fics I've never bothered posting too). Unless, of course, I'm just super interested in a different story - that will always be first.

I also enter fic exchanges to help me learn writing techniques like writing on a deadline or to force me to get a fic written.

My fanfic has always been about exploring the world and the characters beyond what canon does with them. It's a kind of speculation starting from "what if...?" in story form. I imagine how certain aspects of the world that were never fleshed out might work and think about how the characters would react to situations very different from the ones they face in canon.

Though it mostly stays in daydream form these days.

Heh, twin comments...

is that not all fanfic? I don't understand

You'd be surprised. A lot of people just write smut anymore. Which certainly has a place, but... not the same place.

I don't know. Do you think it's implied by the other comments here that are different? I was just thinking about why I like fanfic without considering how unique my answer was. I've had to explain this to people who don't get the appeal of fanfiction at all so it seemed worth saying.

NAYRT - It certainly seems so. It probably depends a lot on the fandom, but maybe it's also changed, too.

I love to explore the universe. Figure out the backstories of minor characters, what might happen to major characters, missing scenes, that sort of thing. I was writing fanfic at six years old.

For fun mainly. To explore ideas and what ifs, to explore the world and aspects of the universe or concept. But mostly for fun.

For the same reason people write fantasy stories that are blatantly inspired by Dungeons and Dragons. When you've got a preexisting toolset, it's a lot easier to put things together in new combinations and make new statements about old tropes.

I actually find fanfiction harder than original fiction. With my original stuff I know that I understand the characters better than anyone, but with fanfic it's a lot of effort to make sure I'm getting them right.

Yeah, that's why I work more with the settings than with the characters. Every fic I've completed that was more than one chapter starred OCs or nameless minor characters.

I write it because I have an idea that I want to see written that no one has written before or because I feel there aren't enough fics for the pairing and I want to make more.

I get these ideas in my head that chew at my brain and won't leave unless I write them. I don't write much but my stories tend to be sagas are multi chaptered long fic. I like to do crossovers that may or may not be cracky. I do other non crossover fics and sometimes they focus on certain characters or maybe a fic that is an au for an upcoming season/

The few fanfics I've written were stuff I felt NO ONE else was going to write. I had to have an idea I thought was original and I was capable of writing, and would probably never be written if not for me, considering the fandom.
