My fanfic has always been about exploring the world and the characters beyond what canon does with them. It's a kind of speculation starting from "what if...?" in story form. I imagine how certain aspects of the world that were never fleshed out might work and think about how the characters would react to situations very different from the ones they face in canon.

Though it mostly stays in daydream form these days.

You'd be surprised. A lot of people just write smut anymore. Which certainly has a place, but... not the same place.

I don't know. Do you think it's implied by the other comments here that are different? I was just thinking about why I like fanfic without considering how unique my answer was. I've had to explain this to people who don't get the appeal of fanfiction at all so it seemed worth saying.

NAYRT - It certainly seems so. It probably depends a lot on the fandom, but maybe it's also changed, too.
