I have a curmudgeon's attitude towards fanmixes. I think that when you love something (a fandom/ship/etc.), then all songs speak to you of your love, so all that happens is you end up imagining the songs you love fit your fandom/ship/etc. perfectly. So it's just a mix of songs you really like. That's all.

I think that's exactly what happens to a lot of people, but I'm going to be honest...I don't mind all that much.

Now, I would rather fanmixes with loads of creativity, but part of the reason I bother in the first place is because I want to listen to good music, so if the music entertains me and I can see how it relates to the fandom or ship in some sense, I'm okay. Even if the mix is full of songs I've heard a thousand times before.

(Granted, I might not listen to those mixes as often, but I won't unlike a mix for using a Florence song or whatever.)

That's a bit of a problem: I think there are ways to choose songs that would fit a potential pairing based on their characterisation/dynamics in the canon etc. - but as soon as it's not a canon pairing, it obviously tends to go in a more YMMV direction, depending on how you interpret the pairing.
But, just speaking for myself, I almost never use songs that I love anyway if they don't really fit otherwise. In fact, I tend to use songs I might not have listened to a lot before (I have a huge music library and don't know the lyrics for every song so I find "new things" even months after owning an album).
