I agree very much that fanmixes are very same-y. And so often they don't even seem to relate in a musical sense to the fandom. Seriously, not every work/character/relationship is well-represented by sad indie songs.

IA. My fav fanmix is a Sherlock one that basically edits together really short clips (reaction shots, one word answersm, etc) and then, right after Sherlock says something especially douchey, they cut in with Lily Allen's "F*ck YOU". It's so much fun.

Hmmmm, link please?

(As I recall Part 1 was funny as well)

I have a curmudgeon's attitude towards fanmixes. I think that when you love something (a fandom/ship/etc.), then all songs speak to you of your love, so all that happens is you end up imagining the songs you love fit your fandom/ship/etc. perfectly. So it's just a mix of songs you really like. That's all.

I think that's exactly what happens to a lot of people, but I'm going to be honest...I don't mind all that much.

Now, I would rather fanmixes with loads of creativity, but part of the reason I bother in the first place is because I want to listen to good music, so if the music entertains me and I can see how it relates to the fandom or ship in some sense, I'm okay. Even if the mix is full of songs I've heard a thousand times before.

(Granted, I might not listen to those mixes as often, but I won't unlike a mix for using a Florence song or whatever.)

That's a bit of a problem: I think there are ways to choose songs that would fit a potential pairing based on their characterisation/dynamics in the canon etc. - but as soon as it's not a canon pairing, it obviously tends to go in a more YMMV direction, depending on how you interpret the pairing.
But, just speaking for myself, I almost never use songs that I love anyway if they don't really fit otherwise. In fact, I tend to use songs I might not have listened to a lot before (I have a huge music library and don't know the lyrics for every song so I find "new things" even months after owning an album).

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed so much. When I first found out about fanmixes, I thought they would be a great way to find interesting new music, but they're all the same old, and I don't particularly like acoustic drippy folk music either. More upbeat rock fanmixes please.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
I can give you a mostly sad classic rock fanmix, haha.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
I can't really get into fanmixes. Fanvids yes, absolutely, but unless I can see how the song fits the fandom/characters/ship, I don't really feel any connection to it.

I do like listening to fanmixes for fics while reading said fic. I've been spoiled for the plot of the fic a few times that way, lol.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
and mixes with different songs then the usual don't get listened to because the masses want another rehash of the same old sad indie songs that apply to every character and pairing on the planet. (bitter old man grumbling.)

I just go for mixes that focus on themes rather then characters because they're a bit more interesting. Like, a hunger games fanmix focused on songs about war instead of peeta and katniss' relationship.

I've always wanted to make a kind of hard mode Fanmix Challenge, where there are rules in place that prevent people from doing a lot of these annoyances, like no Marina or Florence, no more than one song per fanmix by any one artist, etc. Extra hard mode would be picking songs that the character might actually listen to, not just any song that kind of reminds you of them. But I thought that it could come across as mean-spirited.
fishnchips: (Eh)

[personal profile] fishnchips 2015-08-13 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
.. "Picking songs the character might listen to" gets interesting really fast when you have, say, Japanese characters who would probably listen to Japanese music. Good luck finding fitting songs, what with not a lot of people being fluent enough to translate the lyrics and translated lyrics of Japanese songs being pretty rare as soon as it's not a mainstream band.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Hence "might" and "extra hard mode."

yo as someone who organized a f!s mix tape exchange that one time i would absolutely take part in this and it would be fucking awesome

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 11:53 am (UTC)(link)
that sounds awesome, I'd love the challenge

On one hand, I'm pretty picky about fanmixes as well (like - I won't include songs that only vaguely remind me of a character/fandom with one line only. If the song doesn't fit completely, I won't include it.). But on the other hand: Doing fanmixes isn't like drawing or writing - you really only have to throw music together that fits a character/fandom(at least in your opinion). So whenever I see people like OP, I keep wondering if they ever created one of those non-samey, super original and flawless fanmixes they want to see. Since, you know, they seem to know so much better.

You obviously haven't been in the right places. Personally, yes, I have noticed that trend, HOWEVER, I don't listen to those mixes. There will always be a diamond in the rough, and I think I'm lucky to follow some cool people on tumblr, bc when I come across a mix lately, it defies all of your bullet points. I'm linking you to a couple :)

Oh GOD. Someone did a fan mix for one of my books that I actually had a Canon soundtrack to (unofficially, of course... I curated my own soundtrack and made it available as a YouTube mix with the caveat that none of it was official) and their mix was so terrible. God. I was irrationally pissed that they thought any moment in my book could be set to a Lana del Rey song or someone like that or worse, edm. I was offended. That was three books ago and I still get a pang in my heart thinking someone misinterpreted my characters enough to think that Edm was appropriate at any point, but whatever. I've gotten over it. Mostly. Sure, it's flattering that someone thought to make a mix based in your hard work, but man, they had terrible taste.

Okay, but do you mean you want more creativity or that you want people to pick the music you personally don't consider boring? Cause I agree people could do less saturating of the same artists and songs but they're not going to use music genres they don't really respond to just for the purpose of being different. And I say this as someone whose mixes do seem to get passed over when I don't use what all the kids are listening to these days.

there are good ones out there but they're hard to find. I really like this portal one http://chiyo-no-hikari.livejournal.com/108906.html, one for alexander the great http://ilvalentinos.tumblr.com/post/101535861928/hurry-up-with-my-damn-croissants-a-mix-for-the and meowgon's fanmixes. I'd love to see more rap and hip hop in general too

Oh gosh, yeah. I've been trying to listen to fanmixes but so far, nothing has really caught my attention. It reminds me of a secret someone did about how the OP only found songs by either FOB/P!ATD/And the other ones that dressed like goth kids whose band name I forgot but they disbanded anyway.

On the other hand, I can understand them a bit because making a fanmix is harder than it looks. I like the ones that kinda tell a story, and you can relate the songs to stuff the characters have been through, but those are really hard to find.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-13 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
For the few fanmixes I've made, I've tried to mostly make them songs I feel the character would listen to (unless they fit perfectly with the character art/plot).

What I don't get is why they're all like 12 songs only. WHAT'S THE POINT IF IT'S NOT ENOUGH TO FILL A CD IN YOUR CAR?!
