Did you hear about how Bernie Sanders' rally in Seattle was taken over by two Black Lives Matter activists? They literally went up on the stage, shoved him over, took the microphone and refused to leave. Bernie waited for them for like twenty minutes, let them do their thing, and tried to get the microphone back but they still wouldn't let him. So he had to leave...

Yeah, I've been watching the coverage on Chris Hayes' show. The representative for the Black Lives Matter sort of had be the first time I saw her but she was on again and lost all credibility with me.

ayrt

I had heard a rumor that the women who went on stage were not actually affiliated with Black Lives Matter, even nice conspiracy theories about them being hired by other candidates to make Bernie look bad. Really hoping that is the case, otherwise, what the fuck is the point of the Black Lives Matter movement at all? what are they doing?

I saw a comment on Gawker (so take this with several grains of salt) from someone who'd done more research on the activists involved. He claimed they reject the concept of "white allies" and believe that black people should completely separate themselves from white people. They don't care one way or another about Sanders because he's white, but they made a stink about him anyway because, I dunno, black power or something.

Black Lives Matter is not really an organized movement at all, is the thing. It's hard to figure out what makes someone "affiliated with BLM".

From what I've read, they're associated with a Facebook group that's a spinoff of the main BLM Facebook group

It was a Social Security & Medicare rally that Bernie happened to be speaking at, not a Bernie Sanders rally.

Also, IMO, the problem was more with the execution on the part of the BLM activists than anything else. It's not wrong in itself.

??

Going up to a rally that's unrelated, shoving an old guy, stealing the microphone to hijack the event and forcing an audience who is there for a different purpose to listen to you and generally be obnoxious, and end up ruining the entire rally... how is that not wrong?

Re: News Thread

Why's it wrong? Why should I care whether or not it's obnoxious?

It was gracelessly executed, and probably ultimately counterproductive in terms of the ends. But at the same time, that's kind of the way the game is played. And I think really I'm more defending the broader BLM, anti-racist approach to the Sanders campaign, which a lot of people have come around to criticize after the Seattle thing. But really, what the hell's wrong with it? They want to commit the Democratic Party and the left more thoroughly to their position. And their position is pretty much right, so who gives a shit?

It's wrong because it's derailing.

Wat.

Re: News Thread

-The event was about another important issue, and hijacking it so it's about your issue is not only rude, it's pissing on those other issues. Police abuse is an important issue but NOT the only important issue.
-The women looked fucking crazy, were rude as fuck, and almost definitely hurt the cause. They're alienating their support, so it hurts the BLM movement more than anyone.
-Shoving an old man and prying the microphone from his hands is not only rude, it's something else entirely. I wouldn't have been mad if someone escorted them from the event.
-Bernie Sanders would've been MORE than happy to have BLM speakers speak at his events. He's all for frontlining that issue and he has the track record to prove that he's willing to take risks to stop racial inequality. So again, these women were fucking assholes.

Bernie Sanders is not the person they ought to be taking advantage of.

They probably did it because they knew he'd let them talk, and they were right.

Why not?

Bernie Sanders has been a huge supporter of African-American rights since the '60s. He was one of the people that was there for MLK's march on Washington in the '60s.
