Re: Asexuality, demisexuality, etc

I don't really buy the whole split-orientation sexual/romantic thing

In what way? Do you not think it's possible for someone to be asexual but still romantically interested in people? That doesn't sound so weird to me.

Even if someone is bi and more sexually attracted to one sex and romantically attracted to the other, I don't think it's that unusual. I think it's actually fairly common, at least among the people I know.

But for someone who's sexually attracted *exclusively* to one sex and romantically attracted *exclusively* to the other, I have a harder time buying it. I don't think it's completely impossible, but if it exists I would think it has to be *extremely* rare, and unless the person is poly, it would suck.

I always thought that was part of diverse sexualities. I didn't come out on the premise that bi meant a limited set of partners or relationship preferences. And I'm not fond of having those preferences boosted to the level of an essentialist category.

Ah. That makes sense.

When people are having more in-depth discussions about sexuality, I think it could make sense to use some of those terms, but in general I agree with you. I think just straight, gay, bi/pansexual, and asexual are good enough in most cases, because not all people of whatever orientation are going to have the same preferences or types of relationships so it's not really necessary to be super specific.
