I prefer to write for dying fandoms. It makes me feel like a better writer.

I know the feeling.

Plus you get to feel like you're doing some kind of public service by keeping the fandom alive, at the same time as feeling embarrassed because nobody cares. It's a whole heap of simultaneous contradictions, but at least you get to be one of the fandom's best writers as you do it.

Can't say I agree because I don't write for any fandoms, but god bless you for writing. It sucks when people in your fandom move on, so seeing people passionate enough to stick around (even though they might have few readers) is a comfort.

Awesome! Now I'm trying to think of a way to get you into my old dead fandom. *g*

I feel the same way. During the height of one of my favorite fandoms, my fics would get a moderate amount of attention, but all the recs and gushing praise went to BNFs. Now that my fandom is practically dead, people are just happy to see new fic. I still don't get a ton of comments, but the ones I do get are a lot longer and full of squee.
