Is she really a fandom darling though? I got the impression that everyone in the fandom thinks she's an awful Mary Sue.

I'm not sure, but I think that was mainly in the first season, before she became an agent and she really had no reason to be there other than her hacking skills and the fact Coulson seemed intrigued by her. Then she actually started doing things, got powers etc.

I think there are two camps. There are those (like me) who find she's a (bit) Mary-Sue(ish). But there are also those who think her entire storyline is awesome. Plus, the whole female POC superhero thing gets people excited, which I can understand.
