In the original Star Trek timeline, the Genetics Wars happened in the 1990s, so it would make a lot of sense for the 1960s to be popularly remembered as a golden age of peace and progress (even though it totally wasn't). Plus, you have the early pioneers of space exploration. So it makes a lot of sense that an idea of the Sixties would be a major influence on post-Atomic Horror space exploration efforts, and in pop culture generally, as the ancient Greeks and Romans were on 18th-century revolutionaries and early 19th-century fashion.
