Character A pines after Character B for chapters and chapters of angst. A distances themselves from B by ignoring them, being rude or cold, whatever. Yet B is presented as the awful one for being oblivious to A's feelings or what have you. And when they get hurt and react in an upset manner, it's not emphasized as much compared to how terrible A feels.

B is not a mind reader goddamnit. Even if A's my favorite in a fandom, treating B so terribly makes me think they're an asshole and unsympathetic as hell. This trope is the fastest way to make me NOT ship A/B.

Uuugh yes, I hate this one. "It's your fault for not recognizing my feelings that I've kept purposely hidden under my cold layer of assholishness. How could you not see how much I love youuuuu!"

I've read so many of these in Starsky & Hutch fandom, with Hutch as A and Starsky as B. Usually, the author will use this premise to handwave Hutch being a dick to Starsky in season 4 generally and "Starsky vs Hutch" specifically.

Also read a ton of it in Star Trek TOS fandom, with Spock as A and him leaving the ship and deciding to purge all his emotions at Gol prior to The Motion Picture because he believes his love for Kirk makes him a bad Vulcan.

This is actually a guilty pleasure of mine, sometimes, but ONLY if it doesn't involve the "Yet B is presented as the awful one for being oblivious to A's feelings" part. If it has that, my ability to enjoy the fic flies out the window.

Ah yes, the "oh, wait, you only did that awful hurtful thing to me without explanation because you were in love with me? OMG THAT MAKES EVERYTHING YOU DID OKAY I'M SO SORRY FOR BEING MAD AT YOU" trope. Sigh.
