Personally, I don't see the point in racebending the two most prominent characters, and it all seems a little bit like, "kay, what's your angle here?" But in this particular instance I don't think we can fairly say they're whitewashing Miss Justineau's character, given that an even more central character is being racebent the other way.
I suppose you could argue that, as it is, neither of the character are as black as Miss Justineau is described in the book. That's not really an argument I'm prepared to get into though. I mean, I feel like as a white girl I really have no business arguing about the importance or irrelevance of exactly how black a black character is portrayed to be.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 02:13 am (UTC)(link)Uuugh. Just cast things according to the book, Hollywood. Unless a character isn't described racially, just cast people the way they were described.
That goes beyond race too. If the character is a 50 year old, overweight man with a beard, don't turn him into 20 year old athletic woman. It's dismissive of the book.
Back to the topic: I hope there are protests. Neither character should be cast this way.

They also changed the title needlessly, which is something I find just as annoying. I thought "The Girl With All The Gifts" was a solid title. What girl? What gifts? How many gifts are we talking about here? What is the context for this? Whereas "She Who Brings Gifts" just feels awkward and like it's trying too hard to be ~meaningful~.

I think Carey is probably just playing nice in being so chill about the change. Which makes sense. If I'd written a novel and it got made into a movie, I'd play nice too. Make that bank, Carey.
