Can someone explain where racebending comes into this? Was the character originally white and then this description comes from fandom or something?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
From context, I'm assuming that the description is from the book, and the woman pictured (Gemma Arterton I think) has been cast to play the character in the movie adaptation.

Oh I should have thought of that. I've heard more anti-SJ people complain about racebending to turn canon white characters different races than complaints about making canon non-white characters white lately. Usually people say whitewashing when they're complaining about the second one.

I'm sorry, but that writing makes me think of nothing so much as this:

http://www.theonion.com/blogpost/ask-an-elderly-black-woman-as-depicted-by-a-sophom-29855

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I can appreciate the satire of how bad writers write black women, but why put it in the form of an advice column where the examples of bad writing are responses to typical advice-column questions that have nothing to do with anything?

I mean, it would sort of make sense if you had the "elderly black woman" answer the questions in the tone of voice that a bad writer would give an elderly black woman... but the "answers" are mostly descriptions.

This is like the second time I've seen an article make fun of a certain type of writing using that format, and I totally don't get it.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It's one of The Onion's "things", and part of the humor is in the disconnect between the questions and the answers, and the humor of seeing a concept or thing that could not answer questions (like "The Way That Elderly Black Women Are Written By Shitty Writers") 'answer questions' inappropriately.

I don't know the book, but comparing the description in your secret to the photo of the actress, I can see where your anger comes from (and I agree).

Whether the description is well-written or poorly written isn't the point. The character is a WoC. Cast Lupita.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
god dammit is lupita now going to be the female idris elba

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)

Haven't read the book and this is kind of an...odd description, but I see where you're coming from. Though lovely, that actress doesn't match the description at all.

Maybe the filmmakers thought she was a good fit for the character otherwise, but it wouldn't have been that difficult to find someone who fit the canon description. It's dumb.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
well, the wiki page for the book and movie said they were worked on at the same time so ::shrugs:: otherwise, I got nothing.

And the book is.. different. I'm a couple chapters in and well.. it's different.

yeah, the wording's odd because the viewpoint character is...not a normal person. She's sheltered in a very unusual way. it's actually a really cool book. I enjoyed it a lot.

So is the pictured actress playing Melanie or Miss Justineau? And where's the racebending?

OP

(Anonymous) 2015-08-14 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The actress is portraying Miss Justineau.

I just looked up the book/movie, and all I can think about after reading that is "Wow, Naughty Dog's lawyers should take a look at this, because it's one Angry White Male Lead Character Played By Troy Baker away from being a rip-off of 'The Last of Us'".

I mean, hell, it's even got the cordycept fungus-like zombies and military base camps, too.

[personal profile] likeadeuce 2015-08-15 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, it's actually really different. And the fungus zombies thing is based on a scientific concept that I've seen used a lot.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Had to comment just because i actually JUST picked up and finished this book yesterday and had JUST learned about this casting today and gotten pissed about it...so seeing this secret on the front page was nothing short of bizarre.

But yeah. Not my favorite book by any means, but I did like Miss Justineau and this casting pissed me off in a big way.

But according to iMDb (and no idea how reliable this is) the girl playing death-pale, white-blonde Melanie is a young black girl, Sennia Nanua? Just...why make that switch...? (Thinking back on the incredible amount of hero-worship, most-beautiful-thing-in-the-world thing Melanie had for Miss Justineau, the reverse-race-casting kinda makes me balk tbh)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Regrettably, it was probably about shoe-horning a bigger name into a bigger role.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Well, to be fair, Melanie (who I believe is the main character?) is a white girl in the book but is going to be played by Sennia Nanua (who is black) in the movie:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm6451469/?ref_=tt_cl_t8

Personally, I don't see the point in racebending the two most prominent characters, and it all seems a little bit like, "kay, what's your angle here?" But in this particular instance I don't think we can fairly say they're whitewashing Miss Justineau's character, given that an even more central character is being racebent the other way.

I suppose you could argue that, as it is, neither of the character are as black as Miss Justineau is described in the book. That's not really an argument I'm prepared to get into though. I mean, I feel like as a white girl I really have no business arguing about the importance or irrelevance of exactly how black a black character is portrayed to be.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
So it's a double bend?

Uuugh. Just cast things according to the book, Hollywood. Unless a character isn't described racially, just cast people the way they were described.

That goes beyond race too. If the character is a 50 year old, overweight man with a beard, don't turn him into 20 year old athletic woman. It's dismissive of the book.

Back to the topic: I hope there are protests. Neither character should be cast this way.

Dear Hollywood:

Not every book needs to be a movie. Even the really good ones.

Please stop.

P.S., Glenn Close as Dr. Caldwell? Really stretchin that talent there, I see. I assume the director's only note for her will be "Play Cruella de Ville, except stone cold efficient instead of overdramatic."

They filmed part of this in my hometown! It was hilarious, the local media were all like "TOWN CHOSEN AS FILMING PLACE FOR HOLLYWOOD MOVIE, CITIZENS SUPER PROUD" and then it turned out they picked it because it genuinely looks like the set of a zombie apocalypse. Oh, my hometown. <3

As for the racebending casting... considering that quote, it's insulting and undefendable. Why??
