So, I'm working on a fic where a marriage is crumbling after one person experiences some serious trauma that leads to mental health issues he won't seek or accept help for. What ends up looking at first blush like end-of-their-ropes, desperation-based infidelity between his wife and his best friend is revealed (in the very next chapter) to be something he was subtly manuevering them toward with the idea they would take care of each other when he was gone (because it's not going to end well for him).

Where does this fall on the bad trope scale? I'm trying really hard not to make anybody an asshole, just severely messed up with a round of hurt for everyone and a small side of bittersweet comfort.

It depends on how you write it. A trope isn't objectively "bad" or "good." Usually what makes it bad is a combination of a) being written in a cliched way and b) the writer hypocritically pretending that things are much more emotionally simple and black and white than they actually are, thereby making the characters unlikeable and unrelateable.Your scenario doesn't sound like it's either. It's neither a cliche like "their love is more important than fidelity" and it doesn't sound like it's meant to gloss over emotional complexity, but rather to explore it. But of course, it depends on if it's written in a way where the reader can understand the characters' motivations, rather than it just kinda happening just 'cause.

Hey, that's not one I've really seen before.
I'd probably be interested to read it just because it sounds different, but mostly I just despise the whole "oh it's so hot that we're lying to someone and getting away with it, because they deserve it" aspect of infidelity in fiction.
And in life.

Ew.
