Infidelity. Especially if it's "romantic" because they're cheating on an asshole (OC) with the person they think is their true love.

Any variation of "I saved you from an abusive relationship with my dick".

Yes to both of these.

Yes. I hate the idea that cheating is okay if it is true love. The only time I'd ever see it as okay is if the partner is abusive so the person can't get away. Otherwise, you leave your partner then get with the new person. Otherwise you're an ass.

Yeah, infidelity is one of the few things where I just straight-up won't read a fic

Not even once

Yeah, not a fan of infidelity fic at all. Also it's such an awful way to have your ship happen, like no thanks.

I don't mind infidelity when it's one member of the OTP cheating ON the other member (though only if it's done really well). But when it's one member of the OTP cheating on their partner WITH the other member of the OTP? Nope. Will not read this.

In theory, I could read it if it's set in some era in the past where they're married and can't divorce their spouse, but I hate most of those too, since it's usually the guy cheating on his wife, and the power dynamics there piss me off.

Crikey. I thought I was the only one who hates this - and you've articulated one of the reasons why I hate it. I couldn't quite figure it out myself. Thank-you. (It was a fic of this sort that gave me first-hand experience of being triggered, ugh.)

Yeah, those kinds of fics never come off as "oh the poor guy! He's forced to cheat because he can't divorce his wife!" It comes off as "the guy can cheat on his wife with impunity while the wife is forced to sit there and take it because she has no legal, social, or financial ability to leave him, and she'd be fucked if he left her." And him keeping it a secret from her doesn't change the grossness of this situation, IMO.

It's especially dumb when it's possible for the writer to come up with a situation where the husband and wife *could* separate, even if they can't get divorced, but noooooo they think putting them in a situation where he has to lie and sneak around to commit infidelity is so much better.

That's like the situation Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire found herself in - having to be complaisant because she had no choice at all. IRL no-one has the remotest sympathy for the Duke in that scenario, so why in fic scenarios is it supposed to be romantic?... No wonder the poor girl died young, or that her son remained a lifelong bachelor.

I find most historical stories involving marriage horrible and unromantic.
Like, it's okay because your wife is a bitch?
I'd be pretty bitchy too if I lost my freedom and power in a loveless union from which there is no escape other than death. Jesus.

I hate infidelity too and infidelity because "it's true love and my current partner is an asshole!" isn't exempt from this either.

So, I'm working on a fic where a marriage is crumbling after one person experiences some serious trauma that leads to mental health issues he won't seek or accept help for. What ends up looking at first blush like end-of-their-ropes, desperation-based infidelity between his wife and his best friend is revealed (in the very next chapter) to be something he was subtly manuevering them toward with the idea they would take care of each other when he was gone (because it's not going to end well for him).

Where does this fall on the bad trope scale? I'm trying really hard not to make anybody an asshole, just severely messed up with a round of hurt for everyone and a small side of bittersweet comfort.

It depends on how you write it. A trope isn't objectively "bad" or "good." Usually what makes it bad is a combination of a) being written in a cliched way and b) the writer hypocritically pretending that things are much more emotionally simple and black and white than they actually are, thereby making the characters unlikeable and unrelateable.Your scenario doesn't sound like it's either. It's neither a cliche like "their love is more important than fidelity" and it doesn't sound like it's meant to gloss over emotional complexity, but rather to explore it. But of course, it depends on if it's written in a way where the reader can understand the characters' motivations, rather than it just kinda happening just 'cause.

Hey, that's not one I've really seen before.
I'd probably be interested to read it just because it sounds different, but mostly I just despise the whole "oh it's so hot that we're lying to someone and getting away with it, because they deserve it" aspect of infidelity in fiction.
And in life.

Ew.

So much agreed, especially if the assholishness is that they cheated on the character first. But the asshole only did it for the sex while the character did it for love so it's not a double standard! *headdesk*

Re: Fic tropes you hate

[personal profile] belladonna_took 2015-08-17 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes. Never mind the fact that they're now doing exactly what made the asshole person an asshole in the first place, and presumably after they've talked it out and agreed to move past it if they're still together.

I don't find the "it's love!" justification any better or worse than the "it's just sex!" justification.
It's all the same shit in the end.
