Horror anime

Looking for horror anime. Preferably no newer than 2000 (but 80s would do the trick nicely) preferably in relatively short series (or a series of movies) -- about 7-10 should do the trick, I can't deal with very long series. It's why I had to give up on Monster.

Have you watched Parasyte?

Some of the Kara no Kyokai have horror-ish elements, though not sure if that really fits 100%.

....ok well I suppose I'm bad for "true" horror recs ._. Parasyte is still pretty awesome, though.

Aha, no, this was back when money and easy internet access didn't exist in my family. It was in one of those compilation magazines that were popular at one point in time in the 90s. I recall it had a bit of Ice Blade and I think a CLAMP manga as well in that particular issue. Mom grabbed it for me but that was the only issue I ever had.

Ah, okay.
well if you're interested in giving it another try, recently they came out with an anime for it that looked pretty decent. (I didn't watch it because for me the manga was enough, I didn't feel like I needed to see it animated)

It was in Mixxzine, which also had Sailor Moon, and the CLAMP series was Magic Knight Rayearth.

You'd probably be better off with manga honestly, but Shin Sekai Yori has some really good horror elements to it, even if it's not the main focus.

I don't watch anime at all really, that's why I'm asking! :)

(Or, to put it another way, when I told people I was watching the original Patlabor OVA from the 80s people were very surprised. Patlabor's pretty much up my alley though.)

Mononoke is literally 12 episodes. It starts with the last 3 episodes of Ayakashi: Japanese Classic Horror and then continues with the three or four arc spin-off. Definitely something different from the usual anime and I rec it left and right because it's gorgeous AND creepy.

And if you wanna give manga a try, go with anything by Junji Ito.

Quite familiar with Junji Ito, thanks! Love his work, but that dude oughta be locked up with David Lapham for everyone's safety. They can write and draw fucked up Batman comics, I'd read that shit.
