Looking for Music

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm way behind the times. What are the good popular songs from the last 5 years?

I'm looking more towards pop/dance music - something with a good beat, though I'm good with a nice ballad too. I don't mind derivative or ear-wormy.

Looking for sitcoms/other 'fun' TV

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I just want something fun and silly that I can have on Netflix in the background while doing something else. Previous shows I've enjoyed doing this with have included Frasier, 30 Rock, and Better Off Ted, to give an idea of what I'm looking for.

Newsradio.

Unfortunately, it's not on Netflix (whyyyyyyyy)

Grace and Frankie

Lily Tomlin and Janes Fonda star as two women who are left by their husbands (played by Sam Waterston and Martin Sheen) who have secretly been a couple for twenty years.

Try '3rd Rock from the Sun'. Jane Curtain, John Lithgow, a wee Joseph Gordon-Levitt. So silly and fun. Aliens come from outer space (Lithgow, JGL, Stuart French, Kristen Johnston) and 'observe'. It's really clever, and just amusing.

'That 70's Show' is also fun and silly, as is the 'Bernie Mac Show'. All on Netflix.

If you liked 30 Rock and Better Off Ted, Brooklyn Nine-Nine might be about your speed. It plays some of the same games of fucking with traditional sitcom tropes, while also fucking with traditional cop show tropes. Plus, great cast chemistry.

Happy Endings?
Cougar Town?
Is anybody streaming Bad Judge? That has a little bit of the wacky workplace feel of Better Off Ted.

Horror anime

[personal profile] dethtoll 2015-08-15 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Looking for horror anime. Preferably no newer than 2000 (but 80s would do the trick nicely) preferably in relatively short series (or a series of movies) -- about 7-10 should do the trick, I can't deal with very long series. It's why I had to give up on Monster.

Have you watched Parasyte?

Some of the Kara no Kyokai have horror-ish elements, though not sure if that really fits 100%.

....ok well I suppose I'm bad for "true" horror recs ._. Parasyte is still pretty awesome, though.

good anime

[personal profile] ketita 2015-08-15 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by Utena, which made me realize how long it's been since anime last really impressed me. I'm open to older series, as well.

Things I like: plot, sci-fi/fantasy, not too long (up to ~100 eps)

Things I dislike: fanservice, slice-of-life

(The Twelve Kingdoms is an example series I think is absolutely amazing. Sword Art Online is gutter trash)

Spy movies and miniseries

[personal profile] ginainthekingsroad 2015-08-15 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
NO LONG-RUNNING SERIES. SERIOUSLY. If it's a series, it must be short- no more than 30 episodes TOTAL for series.

I've watched a lot in the genre already (and can give recs/details if wanted), but I'm looking for things I've missed. My taste leans more to intrigue/mysteries than outright action, but I'm open to some other suggestions.

[personal profile] philstar22 2015-08-15 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm looking for some new fantasy to watch. I've seen most of the big ones I think. Scifi is cook too as long as it has a fantasy slant.

Standalone fantasy novels

[personal profile] skeletal_history 2015-08-15 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm looking for a good fantasy novel that is a self-contained story, not part of a series, and preferably under 500 pages. By "good" I mean: the characters feel like real people and are genuinely interesting; the plot is gripping (bonus if it hinges on an interesting moral dilemma) and the ending satisfying; and the author has a fine command of the English language.

I'm not here for anything that involves women being treated like shit and it's no big deal (I.e., George RR Martin and his imitators can piss off).

Books I have enjoyed: Felix Gilman's "The Half-Made World" (LOVED THIS), Charles de Lint's "Moonheart," Ursula K. LeGuin's "The Lathe of Heaven" (not the OP of the secret from the other day!), Garth Nix's Abhorsen trilogy, etc.

Thanks for any suggestions you can provide! I go to my library's SF section and it's like 90% 900-page 6-part series, and I don't have the energy for that!
