good anime

[personal profile] ketita 2015-08-15 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by Utena, which made me realize how long it's been since anime last really impressed me. I'm open to older series, as well.

Things I like: plot, sci-fi/fantasy, not too long (up to ~100 eps)

Things I dislike: fanservice, slice-of-life

(The Twelve Kingdoms is an example series I think is absolutely amazing. Sword Art Online is gutter trash)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds like we have similar tastes in anime, so I'm just going to rec a whole bunch of shows that I personally enjoyed. A lot of them are older but are definitely worth the watch!

Wolf's Rain
Fullmetal Alchemist (I enjoyed both the 2003 anime and Brotherhood for different reasons)
Le Chevalier D'Eon
Tiger and Bunny
Samurai 7
Gundam 08th MS Team
Fate/Zero
Record of Lodoss War (I've only seen the OVA, I have no idea if the TV series is any good or not)
Gankutsuou
Guilty Crown
Full Metal Panic (it can be a bit fanservice-y at times but I really enjoyed the plot and characters)
Mononoke
Katanagatari

I'll probably think of more later but that should be a good start for now!

We do have similar tastes! I have watched/liked a bunch of these, but there are some I haven't seen. I will definitely check them out =)))

Thanks!

You're welcome! Hopefully you will enjoy those series as much as I did.

I see you've already seen Princess Tutu and Trigun - I thought of those after I already posted my comment but they are other things I would have recommended. Outlaw Star has a bit of fanservice but it's also a fun space opera sort of show if you liked Trigun. (I hear good things about Space Dandy too but I have yet to watch that one for myself.)

I also enjoyed Durarara and have Baccano on my list of things I need to watch. Oh, and I'll add Iria: Zeiram the Animation to the list of recommendations too, because it's about a badass female bounty hunter who ISN'T overly sexualized.

(I'm also going to be shamelessly going through other peoples' recs to find more things to watch, hahaha)

I have watched Durarara and Baccano, though I preferred Baccano. Durarara, most of the characters never quite did it for me, and I kind of hate the Celty ship with the doctor (I ship her so hard with Shizuo T^T).

I have watched Outlaw Star! I did like it, but that was years and years ago, before I got so tired of some of the fanservice tropes. Idk how I'd feel about it today, but at the time I liked it. I watched one episode of Space Dandy and really couldn't with how chauvinistic he is, and how many boobs there were. It was a huge turnoff for me.

Badass bounty hunter sounds awesome.

Here, I'll try reccing you some! A few seasons ago there was an anime called Akatsuki no Yona that is absolutely adorable. It's basically like Fushigi Yuugi done right. Cool characters, fun humor, invests in character development. It's only weakness is that sometimes the plot feels a teeny bit forced. But really, I loved that one.

If you like sports anime at all, I can't recommend Chihayafuru enough. It's that rare beast - a shoujo sports anime, with an amazing lead girl, and the game they play is Karuta. SO well done.

Level E is short, humorous (with a few darker episodes), and has one of the more satisfying ends I've seen to an anime. It's also very interesting in that it's kind of female-gazey. The only character who really gets objectified is this one pretty dude. It's by Togashi (Yu Yu Hakusho, HunterXHunter), and I love it.

Uchouten Kazoku is very strange, very quality, though I personally found it kind of hard to get into. Some of the issues they deal with were hard for me to accept. But I would definitely rec it as being worth trying.

Seconding Gankutsuou. It's a very different spin on The Count of Monte Cristo, but that allows it to go in its own direction and present some new ideas.

I also tried Le Chevalier d'Eon, but the first episode didn't really sell it to me. Maybe it gets better later.

For FMA, I'd say it's best to just read the manga. The first anime goes off in its own weird direction and forgets all the self-consistency and intricate worldbuilding that made the manga great, and Brotherhood is so close to the manga that it feels kind of pointless.

Ah, I'll have to fight you on this one! I loved both FMAs for different reasons, but I think both of them dropped the ball big time on the ending.
I absolutely detest the ending of the manga, and I think that it kind of derailed at the end as well, just in a different way.

FMA03 and FMAB are both worth watching, imo.

above anon

That was pretty much my take on both FMAs too. I loved them both up until the endings and then they just sort of... fell apart. But even so, the rest of the series was good enough that I'd still recommend them anyway.

A third enthusiastic rec for Gankutsuou, and seconding Mononoke (especially the original 3 episode arc from Ayakashi)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Le Chevalier takes a few episodes to really get going, but once it does, it had me hooked between the plot and the character relationships. The plot had some great intrigue going on, and I really enjoyed the dynamic between the four main characters.

Things I've actually watched that were sci-fi/fantasy and didn't have fanservice:

Princess Tutu: the best thing ever to come out of the postmodernist movement
Trigun: a Buddhist turned Christian makes a Western about Jesus
Digimon Tamers: yes, it's a heavily merchandised boys' show, but it's got an actual brain
Kurau: Phantom Memory: don't give up at the first episode; it gets a lot more sweet and sensitive when she has to protect her sister
Tiger and Bunny: this is how Japan sees American-style superheroes

Things I have on my to-watch list:
Uninhabited Planet Survive
Voltes V
Gun X Sword
Xabungle
Armored Trooper VOTOMS
Shugo Chara!
Death Parade
Night Wizard
Tokimeki Tonight
Magic Kaito 1412
7 Seeds
Nagi-Asu: A Lull in the Sea
Kaiba (warning: kind of messed up)

Wow, I had no idea my list was that long. (And this is excluding all the realistic fiction!)

Out of things you watched I have seen (and liked!) Princess Tutu, Trigun, Digimon Tamers, and Tiger and Bunny. I will check out Kurau, though.

I've heard of Death Parade, but I think I've had my fill of psychobabble/depressing types of series with a lot of death in them. Psycho-pass was the last one I watched, and I only got halfway before I got tired of the edgy.

I've watched Kaiba, but it was a wee bit too weird for me.

I haven't heard of a bunch of the ones on your to-watch list, so I'll go check out their summaries :)

Some that come to mind that either I like or my friends really like: Mononoke, Boogiepop Phantom, Mushishi, Paranoia Agent, Ergo Proxy, and Hell Girl.

Mushishi is an absolutely amazing show. I love it so much. Have you watched Natsume Yuujinchou? It's got similarities with Mushishi, but less weird. It's very nice in it's own way also, though.

I will look these up as well =) thanks!

I almost included Natsume Yuujinchou actually. It's another one that I haven't gotten to yet but I've heard all kinds of good things about from friends.

If you like robots and are not opposed to shows obviously aimed at a younger demographic, Brave Police J-Decker might be to your taste. It's basically a police procedural show with transformers. Fairly plotty too, though it doesn't seem so at first.

Maybe this is too obvious, but if you've ever watched/enjoyed shoujo anime, you should watch Madoka Magica. It looks like typically magical-girl fare, but nope. It messed me up.

Re: good anime

[personal profile] feotakahari 2015-08-15 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I avoided mentioning Madoka Magica because you could argue it has fanservice. I don't think the term really applies, though--there certainly isn't any effort to make the characters "sexy."

Seirei no Moribito
Noir

I've also heard good things about Baccano! but I haven't gotten around to watching it.

My strongest rec would be for Princess Tutu, if you haven't seen it already. It's fantasy, 26 episodes, and has a really interesting plot/fairytale/classical music aspect to it.

Slayers is also a fun anime.

Check out animator expo!

Studio Khara, the studio Anno founded after leaving Gainax, decided to sponsor a ton of various shorts for just the heck of it I guess and they've gotten a lot of talent to work on them. They can be a little hit or miss, but they're really good more often than not.

You can watch 'em here: animatorexpo.com
