I did a horrible thing

(Anonymous) 2015-08-15 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
So while I've been living in this place I've been using my roommate's second dresser because she already lived her before I moved in and there was no sense in me buying a new one and no place for her to put this one.

So I'm currently moving out. And while clearing out the dresser so she could take it to a yard sale I discovered that my laundry detergent had leaked out and destroyed the paint on top. And it turns out that it was an antique, which she never told me, so I've basically destroyed the value of it.

She's only asked me to buy paint to repaint the top. And I can't exactly afford to buy it from her. But I still feel really bad and like I should do something else.

Tbf, not all antiques are valuable antiques. Some are just old. How much was she expecting to get for it at a yard sale?

That's a good point. Some of the paint was already chipped and it is missing one of the drawer handles. I don't know. She didn't tell me. I think it was a charity yard sale, so she wasn't going to get money anyway. That just means I stole money from charity. I just feel so horrible.

If it was gonna go for like $20 I wouldn't sweat it.

No offense to your friend, but that's not really an antique, so I wouldn't sweat it.

You did not steal money from a charity.

Yeah. Totally this.

Honestly, even if that dresser used to be valuable, there are so many things that could permanently devalue a genuine antique.
I'll give a few examples:
- faulty restoration ( paint or other finish applied the wrong way )
- cat scratches or other pet damage
- improper storage ( bad humidity, having had heavy items placed on top of it )
- damage to the bottom of the furniture because of toy induced dents
- faulty repairs ( damage caused by drilling new holes for drawer pulls, swapping out pieces of wood to cannibalize for other woodworking projects )
- minor insect damage
- you name it...

How much would she have hoped to get for it at a yard sale? I mean, yeah, "antique" but you know... a lot of people truly believe they have antiques when what they actually have is an old piece of furniture. Big difference.

I'd just buy the paint, apologize profusely and then do something nice for your roommate, such as offering to make dinner or wash dishes for a week or whatever.

Sounds less antique and more just old, at a yard sale?

I'd say get some cheap paint or varnish (spot test!) and cover it up as an apology but that's it. You don't owe compensation or anything.

And if it helps, when I was moving out last year I knocked the landlord's dresser over and my bed punched a hole right through the middle of it. It was kind of old and shitty so I just got some board backing, putty and varnish and it's noticeable as damage but the whole thing is old and breaking that a glance it looks like it's always been there. He never commented on it. Had all the progress pics to show I went to 'reasonable effort' to remedy it and everything.

So, shit happens. Try not to feel really bad and you don't need to anything else.

High-value antiques tend not to be of styles that were painted. If it was a valuable antique and it was painted, the paint ruined the value, not the damage to the paint. Yard sales are where people go to get rid of stuff and find bargains, not to make good money on a valuable piece. For that, you need to go to an antique dealer or put an ad online. Just fix it so it looks decent.
