Re: Complain about nerd culture here

I've recently got into video games (had only ever played Pokemon before, now I am working my way through highly recommended games), I'm a girl, and I'm not very good at them but I am having fun. But I've heard so many horror stories about "gamers" and "gamer culture" I find myself nervous about seeking out discussions or whatever about them online. I used to be into comic books and I did go through the classic "male nerd interrogates a girl about comics to prove she really has read them" scenario and I don't want to deal with that with video games, especially considering I really am just getting into them.

If you're not averse to Reddit, the subreddit GirlGamers is pretty neat. Easily one of the most friendly subreddits I've ever seen.

Don't sweat the trogs too much. Just play what you like and stay out of male-dominated spaces, it shouldn't be too bad :)

SAME. I recently got into videogames, and I'm playing an MMO (SWTOR). I decline every group invite. God, just looking at the general chat is depressing.

So many 14-year-old boys posturing for each other. (Sad reality: They're probably older and just acting like children.)

Just do what the rest of us gamer girls do and pretend to be a guy. Or actually, just don't discuss your gender at all. The default assumption will be that you're male. You don't need to disabuse anyone of that assumption if you don't want to.

For me, I don't announce my gender or clarify when someone gets it wrong. I'll have my female avatar or whatever, but most people still assume I'm male.

I make sure to talk in the most bored sounding bogan dialect I can when talking in MMOs because I find they're much more focussed on trying to work out what I said and that I'm australian versus I'm a girl.
(although lol at the guy who after I first spoke went "you're a girl!?" then carried on as normal)

Sometimes you do still get creepy fucks. I ignore them. Even if they're offering gifts, thanks but no thanks I got this. I'll die before I take your gifts.

And anyone who tries to interrogate gets dismissed/eyes rolled at.

As long as you don't play anything too competitive it should be fine. RPG oriented people tend to be weird, but nicer. I find the closer you get to PvP, the worse the behavior. Some gaming communities are a lot friendlier and more inclusive than others.
