IA, i'm so goddamn sick of the samey BS.

it used to be all "Chosen One" Tolkien ripoffs and now it's all grimdark antihero Martin ripoffs

the demographic is seriously starting to remind me of comic book readers or people into Warhammer. and not in a good way. just the worst of bitter nerd guys who long to be badass and never will be.

I'm so tired of nerds obsessing over the super marketed movies and games. It feels it doesn't even matter the quality, throw enough money at making some hype and it's like racoons to trash.

The thing is, I like it because it was always something I enjoyed privately because I was embarrassed as a kid. I would rather it be commercial, high-quality and popular, rather than walking around covertly trying to enjoy my hobby. I like that there is just so much more of it around and that the comic book industry has been revitalized because of it. I like that we are getting live-action anime movies and all the things I would have loved to have seen as a kid are being funded because a lot of people genuinely enjoy a good story with all the action and fantasy those genres bring. Things that would never have seen the light of day, if it weren't for the success of these movies. The MCU is generally well done and has a wide appeal.

I hate all the stupid schisms and rivalries and "us vs. them" bullshit that goes on in geek circles.

And there's so fucking many of them. Science fiction vs. fantasy, high fantasy vs. low fantasy, hard science fiction vs. soft science fiction, literary science fiction vs. televised science fiction, American cartoons vs. anime, American comics vs. manga, superhero comics vs. indie comics, YA literature vs. adult literature... the list is never-ending. I could go on, but I won't.

I like ALL of the things listed above. Why is that so terrible?

It's one thing to compare and contrast different genres and mediums and have discussions over their tropes ad conventions and whatnot, but I don't see much of that. What I see instead is people screaming about how X is objectively better than Y and claiming that if you're a fan of X you cannot also be a fan of Y. If you refuse to take a side and say "I like both", you're accused of being a fence-sitter or wishy washy or NOT A TROO FAN.

That women have to "prove" they are geeky, and anything they say or do will make others (men AND other women, even) question their geek cred. Whereas a guy never, ever gets questioned.

What isn't there to complain about? I hope it disappears up its own asshole. Nerd culture is bullshit. Geek elitism is bullshit. Whining about "fake geek girls" is bullshit. It's all fucking bullshit.

It's just another form of othering. It all boils down to the idea that being a "geek" is some sort of separation from larger society. People deemed as "nerds" are ostracized and subject to bullying; in turn, they close ranks and reject anyone who doesn't meet their standards, including/especially women.

The problem is, that's all a load of crap. Everyone's into something geeky. Even popped-collar dieudbreaux are into fantasy football or something. My dad, like a lot of men his age, likes models (toys, not pretty people.) Basically, if everyone's into something geeky, then either everyone's a geek, or nobody's a geek, and being elitist is basically being an asshole because there's nothing to be elitist about.

Who on Earth is buying all these long-running fantasy series? I just wait for them to end so I can collect them all, and most of them don't seem to end, so I never touch them.

I've recently got into video games (had only ever played Pokemon before, now I am working my way through highly recommended games), I'm a girl, and I'm not very good at them but I am having fun. But I've heard so many horror stories about "gamers" and "gamer culture" I find myself nervous about seeking out discussions or whatever about them online. I used to be into comic books and I did go through the classic "male nerd interrogates a girl about comics to prove she really has read them" scenario and I don't want to deal with that with video games, especially considering I really am just getting into them.

I really hate a lot of male nerds. I will actually avoid them.

(To a certain extent, female nerds, too, especially the more loud and personal-space-invading fangirls.)

I know this is bad, and you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover... but in my head I'm expecting them to say something sexist. So many of them just seem so bitter and angry and wanting to prove their masculinity, it's kinda sad. A lot of them are super elitist, too.

I'm tired of encountering that BS in fan circles so now I just avoid big social things like cons. I just want to enjoy my stuff in piece.

I hate how insecure a lot of geeks/nerds are. I think that's where a lot of the problems spring from - the elitism, the us-vs-them BS.

It's so childish. Just because you got bulled in high school for liking Pokemon doesn't justify you taking it out on others.
