Who on Earth is buying all these long-running fantasy series? I just wait for them to end so I can collect them all, and most of them don't seem to end, so I never touch them.

you hit my biggest pet peeve about fantasy novels

WHY? what is wrong with writing something standalone? it's gotten to the point where i will refuse to read series. don't even touch them.

YES. I'm often so disappointed too, it's like sprawling detailed worldbuilding epics are a substitute for a self-contained book strong, unique and memorable enough to stand on its own.

I get that a lot of it is what publishers will publish though. Series = more sales. People keep buying them though.

It's a publishing thing, unfortunately. It's difficult for anyone who isn't already a big name to get genre fiction published unless they've at least got a trilogy planned, because it's easier to milk a fanbase for a single premise over a number of years than it is to build a new fanbase for works that might vary wildly in tone and content.
