I hate all the stupid schisms and rivalries and "us vs. them" bullshit that goes on in geek circles.

And there's so fucking many of them. Science fiction vs. fantasy, high fantasy vs. low fantasy, hard science fiction vs. soft science fiction, literary science fiction vs. televised science fiction, American cartoons vs. anime, American comics vs. manga, superhero comics vs. indie comics, YA literature vs. adult literature... the list is never-ending. I could go on, but I won't.

I like ALL of the things listed above. Why is that so terrible?

It's one thing to compare and contrast different genres and mediums and have discussions over their tropes ad conventions and whatnot, but I don't see much of that. What I see instead is people screaming about how X is objectively better than Y and claiming that if you're a fan of X you cannot also be a fan of Y. If you refuse to take a side and say "I like both", you're accused of being a fence-sitter or wishy washy or NOT A TROO FAN.

Ha, I was just complaining about this on another site. I like all these things too and I'd love to see more discussions instead of opposite camps hurling stereotypes at each other and pretending they're proof that this or the other thing is garbage.

Lol right? I guess geeks want to feel better than someone and that their obsessions are more elite than someone else's. I don't mind playful rivalry with say, ship wars, or Star Wars vs Star Trek, or whatever. But once you are seriously putting any emotion into it, you're going too far.

The manga/anime versus cartoon/comic divide really annoys, because not only does it make a dumb divide between people who are into literally the same thing, it leaves non-american/non-japanese work to the wayside too.

That bothers me too. It's hard to find people who share my love for French animation.

NAYRT

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with French animation, but I do like the Franco-Belgian comics I've read!

Like what? I don't know as much about comics in general but I'm always happy to get recommendations.

Off the top of my head: Asterix, Tintin, Yoko Tsuno, Spirou et Fantasio, Blacksad... there's a bunch more, but I'm drawing a blank right now.

Oh yeah, and everything by Joann Sfar! Joann Sfar is the best.

I've been meaning to check out Asterix for a while. I should really get around to doing that. I think I've heard of a couple of the others (in addition to Tintin obviously) but I know nothing about them. I'll look into them. Thanks!

Yes, this too! America and Japan aren't the only countries that make cartoons and comics, FFS.

What really pisses me off is when someone arguing the inferiority or superiority of manga tries to support their argument by dissing/praising "western comics", as though all western countries produce the exact same sorts of comics.

NO.

You can NOT lump together multiple comic traditions that evolved separately and have very different stylistic conventions. It is ridiculous, and unfair to both sides of the debate.

Absolutely. And I have a hard time deciding who's more obnoxious about it. I used to have a friend who refused to play ANYTHING made in Japan. Really made conversing with him a bit difficult at times. And a while back I had an argument with a weeb that made me so fistclenchingly fucking angry. I'd said something about how the whole anime vs comics argument was dumb, and she, colossally missing the point, said, "I agree, anime is clearly superior."

Point is geeks are dipshits.

Agreed.

And, if everyone could get along, maybe, for just FIVE seconds, maybe, just maybe we'd have more awesome stories as we mix up genres instead of "noooo! You can't do that! It's this or nothing!"

Because some magic in space or elves in a post-apocalyptic world or aliens in a high fantasy romp could be fun.

Le sigh.

Hey, I'm working on all those things! :D Especially the elves in a post-apocalypse.

I would love to see more mixing and experimenting with genre conventions.

I'd love to see more genre-bending. Pity it's so rare.

Yessss.

I'd love to see more mixes like this, they can be such a fun idea.

Ugh this, thiiiiiiiissss.

I like everything, so long as I find it compelling I don't care what the genre is, I just like to be entertained!

Yeah that I can agree on. It's human nature, but it's so incredibly stupid.
