Image: A cover of one of the Archie comics collections. Dilton is firing a huge snowball out of a catapult at Archie, who is sitting on the ground covered in snow, while Betty stands nearby holding two regular sized snowballs. Archie is looking at Betty angrily, declaring "Dilton does not fight fair!"

Text: I was really into these comics as a kid, and Betty was always my favorite character. And because I wanted her to be happy, I wound up headcanoning that she would ultimately wind up with Dilton. She deserved way better than Archie, and Dilton seemed like the best option out of all the available guys.

Of course, now I'm wondering if I was identifying with her sweet nature and desire to be a writer, and projecting my own preferences for guys onto her. Either way, though, I still think Archie isn't that great a catch.

That's sweet.

I don't think this thread will be sweet, though.

Why not?

Archie sucks. I've always thought that Betty and Veronica should dump his ass and hook up with each other.

Betty/Dilton sounds cute too, though.

Archie is a dork, he's also sexist and looksist, Betty and Veronica both deserved better.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-16 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Looksist? That isn't even a thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-16 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
sure it is. prejudice based on whether somebody's good looking or not, like racism or sexism.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-16 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
So... like 99% of humanity then?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-16 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
just because a lot of people do it doesn't make it okay.

What's wrong with choosing a 'mate' based on their inherent attractiveness level to you? What I find attractive someone else might find hideous.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-16 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
People who aren't very good looking get tired of being treated like shit real fast.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-16 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
And again, we're back to 'everyone has a different idea of what attractive is'. From skin colour, to hair and eye colour, to weight, to muscle volume, etc.

I know a lot of people who would be considered 'ugly' or 'unattractive' by perfectionist/movie standards who are in happy loving relationships.

Nevermind that personality and attitude and express itself in your looks too. If you're content, happy, proud of who you are, people are more inclined to find you attractive than if you're miserable, an emotional vampire, etc.

I have a nice body, am smart, warm, have a good sense of humor, and am well-educated. I also have a face that could fucking crack glass. Tell me who finds that attractive.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-16 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone who doesn't think you have "a face that could fucking crack glass".

(Anonymous) 2015-08-16 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
i know you're trying to be nice, but there's people out there with disfigured faces that aren't attractive by any means and suffer a lot of shit because of it

pretending there's ~some special someone~ who will find them attractive is doing a disservice to the crap they go through

No. It isn't.

I think that's also called "being shallow" ?

Betty is basically the anime childhood friend character before anime was even a thing. Of course you project on her ♥

Although he's certainly not my favourite, I do like Archie. I kinda like to think that Betty and Veronica have just idealised him so much, but have yet to realise it and once they do they will finally have their korrasami ending. Not really his fault he's been waifu'd. About the only romance I really cheered for him in was with Cheryl Blossom, and that was in the Sharknado crossover.

Archie's character seemed to depend on the issue - same with Betty and Veronica, to be honest. (For all Veronica was supposed to be the shallow one, Betty was sometimes just as shallow.) Sometimes he seemed like he more or less meant well and Betty and Veronica couldn't take hints, putting him in impossible positions, other times he outright played them, except that was played for laughs.

I ship Jughead/Veronica for some reason I can't quite explain. I never considered Dilton/Betty, but now that I have, I think they'd be pretty cute.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-17 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Archie definitely wasn't a catch. I still don't get why both Veronica and Betty were obsessed over him.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-17 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, it's mostly because they started out as props for stories where Archie was the focus -- the two girls he wanted, and got up to zany antics chasing. By the time readers and the writers started thinking things like, 'wait, what do the girls think about all this?' the pattern was locked in, and could only be deviated from in minor ways.
