Can you rec me any movies or books* where the "freedom fighters" or "rebellion" characters are portrayed to be sympathetic, but still in the wrong and in the long run fucking everyone over with good intentions?

*that aren't blatant propaganda pieces, obvo

Edmund Burke, Reflections on the Revolution in France

(Anonymous) 2015-08-16 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it nonfiction?

I should have specified fiction, sorry. If it's real history there will always be two sides to every story, I meant in a fictional setting like Star Wars

I am Legend

In a world where everyone has turned into a vampire, a lone human man goes out and hunts them down and even starts to experiment on them to see how they work and if there is a cure. Turns out what he thought were monsters, turned out to be people (they are still infected but with the right medication can live out normal lives.) And he is the real monster going out in the day and preying on them.

Oh, yeah. The book. Definitely the book. There hasn't been a good movie version of this book ever. Which is strange because it's not a complex book. But they always want to take such drastic liberties with it. Weird.

Omega Man wasn't bad. It doesn't compare to the book, but it's better than the other two.

This probably isn't what you're looking for but it popped in my head and here's the link for the whole movie:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ly8TD0fKcvs

It's called "The Land of the Blind" and it's an INCREDIBLY cynical take on "freedom fighters" and rebellion characters -- I wouldn't say they're portrayed sympathetically but the film kind of brutally and unsubtly satirizes the fact that rebellions often become as bad or worse than the thing they're replacing.

The current run of IDW's Transformers comics has this. I'm still carving my way through the early beginning, so I can't pinpoint exactly where those themes start to get strong, But I think you could start with the "Robots in Disguise" books leading up to and after the Dark Cybertron arc.

Basically, the Decepticon's also are/were the rebellion formed as a movement for equality in a world where robots were forced to be limited to their "function", and rather very many oppressed classes from it. "You are being deceived" being their slogan. Of course, if you are aware of any TF canons, you know that Megatron goes off the rails as a villain, so this is very much a movement gone wrong at the expense of a fuckton chunkmillions of lives including other species.

It can be sort of trouble gathering all right issues though, so I'm also going to recommend the standalone mini, "Last Stand of the Wreckers". You don't have to know your TF lore, and you can jump right into this. This one's from the Autobots side of a merc-like task force called The Wreckers. Emphasis on merc-like.

Blake's 7

(Anonymous) 2015-08-16 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Sort of, I'd say. The Federation they're up against is legitimately and unambiguously evil, so it's not necessarily that the rebels are in the wrong, it's just that in the long run their efforts do bugger all to help and get a lot of people killed. The extra-galactic alien invaders only confused the issue.

I think of the Blake's 7 gang as being in the right, but often not for the right reasons, and generally really sucking at what they were trying to do.

The Winds of the Forelands. The rebels are violently responding to a long and ugly history of racial oppression. The villain is using them as a shortcut to power, and will become a tyrant if not stopped.

Oh, well, then I'd say the first arc of Berserk as well.

Did you make this thread just to try to piss of dethtoll?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-17 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
No, it was inspired by the Star Wars secret

(Anonymous) 2015-08-17 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I think there are some fairly strong hints in the Les Miserables musical that les Amis are wrong-headed and that they probably would fuck the people over with their good intentions.
