Yeah, it's never been an amazingly plotted show.

But there have been some amazing performances (sometimes in a very scenery-chewing way *cough* Ian Bohen *cough*). I liked the past seasons (I was even okay with season four, though some of the episodes were a slog to get through). But I watched the first couple of episodes of the this season and I've lost interest in watching (though I'm still DVRing episodes because sometimes it's hard to let go of a show). You're right, its strength has always been in its cast, not the writing, but the writing does also matter because, after the second season, each season (or partial season) has felt really different from the last.
