The strength *has* been in the cast, but they're replacing most of the interesting cast with boring, cookie-cutter twinks who can't emote to save their lives. Plus the guy who plays Scott is just...so fucking boring. His whole 'pure Alpha' storyline is boring, his 'moral dilemma' storylines are boring.... Sorry, but everything about him is boring, and they're mostly focusing on him this season.

I really liked Kira (even if she was just an Allison replacement - one hot, weapon-using girl for another, they even slotted her into Allison's exact place and actions in the opening credits) and still do, though her storyline is going nowhere. And the Lydia/Parrish 'relationship' is so forced it's painful. Even Melissa and the Sheriff have just...lost their interesting edge. I'm still enjoying the Stiles actor's acting a lot, but his storyline has become pretty attenuated.

You're right, the plot has always been pretty damn thin, and Davies/the writers have publicly stated a number of times that they just don't care about plot holes, which is a shame. They've also been pretty lame about the whole Stiles/Derek thing, even banning mentioning it at a couple cons (something the Supernatural con circuit has never done), and made a lot of 'no homo' noises, but only over those particular characters. So - eh. I think it's a case of Davies/the writers getting way too lazy and complacent, and the ever-revolving actors/characters just not holding anybody's interest.
