Windows 10 has wrecked my computer :(

(Anonymous) 2015-08-16 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Let this be a warning to others who also use Lenovo PCs, idk.

I don't mean that it's inconvenient to use. I don't mean that this or that application is finicky now. I mean that my three-year-old laptop is basically unusable at the moment.

For some unholy reason, the installation process has locked me out of my admin rights. Meaning I can't even create new documents in MS Word, and also can't edit old ones, so I can't work period. I can't do basic things like take screenshots, or use Paint. I can't verify myself on my PC so therefore, I also cannot run recovery or repair programs, authorize downloads or updates, or create new profiles. Naturally, this also means I can't rollback to my previous OS, because I'm not authorized to do such things. My SO tried to help out by running recovery from a bootable USB stick, but we got an error message that my harddrive is locked. And since the system is so brand fricking new, there are no solutions or fixes available online.

I don't want to spread panic or anything, but I've been googling around, and some other people seem to have the same troubles, especially on Lenovo comps. I'm a freelancer and I'm in the middle of an assignment (which is why I thought, "let's get this upgrade thing over with real quick, before next week hits"), and this has royally fucked me over. (I mean, I can work elsewhere, but I have lost multiple work hours dealing with this bullshit, and will definitely lose more. Not to mention all those files I'll have to transfer since I can't work on them otherwise.)

So, I'll probably spend all day tomorrow on service hotlines, looking for anything that could help me. I've already heard of one Lenovo user who'll have to get a new harddrive since his laptop still isn't functioning properly, even after he somehow managed to rollback to Windows 8. I hope it won't come to that, but who knows.

Ironically, the one thing that does work is my internet browser (Chrome. I haven't tried Edge.), so here I am complaining. The cursor is bouncing all over the place and the touchpad is fritzing out in regular intervals, but that seems like a minor annoyance right now.

Idk, I needed to rant. Anybody else got any Windows 10 horror stories to commiserate? Or has it worked for you? If yes, I'm happy, because I really wouldn't wish this crap on anyone.

I just ordered a computer with Windows 10 on it... although hopefully the fact that Windows 10 is on it will mean it won't ruin anything.

OP

I hope so, too! If it comes pre-installed, it might work better, fingers crossed!

(During my excessive googling, I've read that some computer manufacturers make Windows 10 custom-builds loaded with additional programs that *might* interfere. But not all do that. And it might be good idea to start from scratch. The OS itself does seem pretty okay. Good luck!)

The IT guy at work has a beta version from months ago. It was the worst piece of crap ever. He tried to demonstrate the differences of Windows 7, 8, and 10 and 10 only opened and froze. He couldn't do anything and that happened multiple times. I'd turn around to his desk and just laugh every time it was frozen.

I'm not much in a laughing mood over this, but that mental image did make me laugh, so thanks. XD

Again, he's been fiddling with it for MONTHS and one day he was just trying to change the desktop background to some beach scene and it froze when he right clicked.

Glad I could make you laugh and really, I hope it works better for you and you find a solution.

And this is the IT GUY?

Jesus. If even the people whose job it is to WORK WITH COMPUTERS can't deal with Windows 10, what hope does the average Joe have?

There is no way I am upgrading now.

Yeah, this was the beta test version sent out to tech guys. I think this was about April when we were playing with it and he just gave up. There were way too many kinks for them to have resolved by now and there's no way I'd upgrade now at all.

D: Holy crap that sucks. I hope can fixed, and you don't lose anything.(My dad managed to accidentally wipe my hard drive trying to fix an old computer of mine once. It was an absolute nightmare, but we found a program that managed to get almost everything back.) I have windows 10 on my computer, and I've had no problems with it. Other than some appearance changes, I really haven't noticed any difference from 8 so far.

I'm glad you got most of your stuff back! Losing files is the worst. At least I still have mine, even if I can't do anything with them on my laptop, lol.

I upgraded from Windows 7, and I wondered if that was related, but then it runs fine on my SO's PC, who had Windows 7 previously, too. And yeah, he's had no problems with it either. So I'm suspecting that it might be related to my manufacturer, but really, it's so early, nobody knows anything. :|

Installing an OS can be a pain in the ass even at the best of times (I pretty much had to call in a friend to help reinstall W7 on my new HD) but W10 seems like it's been a big disaster for some people. I'm sorry you've had so much trouble.

Thanks! Yeah, it's the weirdest thing. I ran like a dream on my SO's PC, which is what encouraged me to try it. And now this crap, lmao. Well, at least I learned a lot of spiffy new computer lingo through frantic googling the past few days, haha.

"Lenovo"

Well, there's your problem. IBMs haven't been the same quality as they used to be since about 2000, IME.

I was considering upgrading to 10 (I have Windows 7 right now and had to do a bit of work to turn off the updates because it was trying to force me to update to 8 when I didn't want to) but I've heard enough from other people that I think I'm gonna stick with 7 for now. I know a couple people who got BSOD during installation or whose computers went from working fine to nigh-unusable and I don't think that's a coin I want to flip.

Same here - have 7, just had my computer hardware upgraded (for gaming purposes) and I trust 7 and don't want to risk 10 until it's had some time for bugfixes to come out.

Conversely, I got Win 10 and it works great! I absolutely love it. Wish there were more themes like 7, but 7 has been out for so long that it's absolutely understandable it'd have more customization available for it. I'm pretty much in love with this OS after using 8; it's like Microsoft actually listened to all the feedback for it and took it into consideration - this feels like an OS meant for the Desktop, and a lot of the search features and small things that just make it easier to use have made it a lot of fun. Generally I find it just performs better all around. I've had some problems with driver installs and updates, but since Win 10 is only just deployed, I'm willing to cut it some slack on that. I haven't run into any big problems at all.

Nonny, that sounds horrible D:D: I hope you can get it sorted quickly. I have no W10-related stories, I still use W7 and love it (would've stuck with XP if I can, really), and all the horror stories relating to W10 is making me afraid of updating.

I think unless I'm in need of a new laptop/PC and the W10 comes pre-installed with it, I'm not going to do anything about my OS for now.
