Well, reading things like Card Captor and Sailor Moon that had some pretty big age gaps as a kid seemed romantic. As an adult though, it's all hrrrrrggggg.

I guess that's why kids are considered unable to consent. I wouldn't say we were naive, but we sure weren't thinking of the bigger implications and consequences.

Even when I was a kid, age gap relationships were considered wrong and creepy by everyone I knew. And I'm talking 15 year old with 19 year old. It would get a lot of suspicion. The last thing it was considered was romantic.

I'm a little puzzled when I see comments about adult/kid relationships seeming romantic to people when they were younger. How could this happen?

Jr/MOMO doesn't squick me AS badly, but yeah, I do think some years need to happen before they even think of approaching that.

True, but when I was a kid I just thought Albedo was creepy. I didn't pick up the pedo vibes as well as I do now that I'm an adult and seeing it again.
It's just like when I was a little girl I loved the magical girl genre because it's girls friendships and them being badass, but now I realize it's demographic is middle age otaku men...

magical girl genre's a little more complicated than that

initially magical girl shows were honestly aimed at young girls

some of these shows ended up having an otakubait audience (CCS being one of the more notable ones), so some otakubait shows were made

some of these were popular so a market ended up happening

but there's still shows about magical girls aimed at young girls (precure for instance), there's just the otakubait audience that follows them as well

Well, I guess to be fair, the censored version of him searching MOMO's body didn't help.

The magical genre is still a genre that targeted towards little girls. I have a lot of friends whose daughters (mostly younger than elementary school, and always daughters, I guess the gender coding is super obvious with that show) watch Precure. That, of course, doesn't change the fact that it has a fringe demographic of fucking creepster otaku men, but that's not really the show's fault.

It's been a loooong time since I've played this game, but I remember being uncomfortable with certain aspects of her storyline too. Granted, I'm sure we were supposed to be, but...still.

I still liked her though and her relationship with Ziggy was adorable.

I could never ship her and Jr. though, for the reasons you mentioned. (Though I DID ship Jr. with Albedo and Gaignun and that's still pretty fucked up.)

I loved Ziggy and MOMO's relationship! I thought it was really cute at points and stuff. Helped offset Ziggy's incredibly tragic backstory, too. D:

Absolutely! Had MOMO not come into Ziggy's life his story would've been awfully grim and depressing. (Well, it still was...but MOMO gave it some sweetness and happiness.) There's was one of the nicest relationships in the series.

And yeah, I agree with you as well. It's been a long time since I've played the XS games -I really should again one of these days-, but yeah, that was pretty much my sentiments too. I wasn't surprised the game was creepy towards MOMO, but still disappointed. At least she looked a little older-ish in Episode 3 (then again, everyone did compared to Ep. 1), but that doesn't change much, if at all. :T

In specific regard to the second half of your secret, yeah, I could only really platonically/BroTP ship Jr. and MOMO, because the age disparity -and other reasons- was way to big for my comfort level. TBH, I think it'd be interesting to see if this would still be a popular ship or not if the game came out these days, given some fandom's crusades against anything that could be construed as pedophilic.

Yeah, I remember playing Xenosaga and being really put off by her because of the loli shit and later being surprised because I actually kind of liked her anyway. For a loli, she was reasonably mature.

That said, her voice in XS2 was like, the worst thing ever and I couldn't stand her. I must have really loved the Xenosaga series though because I willingly played XS2 twice lmao. (once when it came out, and much later when I finally got my hands on XS3.)

MOMO was an interesting and lovable character but unfortunately she was sexualized to pander to the loli fetishists.
I played the game as a 13-14 year old girl and I was blissfully unaware that certain aspects of her character are just fanservice. She was one of my favorite characters along with Jr. and KOS-MOS, and I always had the three of them as my battle party.

I don't think I can watch the Albedo scenes the same way again, but I still like the character.

XS2 is terrible. I enjoyed the story just fine, but ugh to the random character design changes, the non-Mitsuda music (oddly, the same composer filled the third game with so much gorgeousness), and the shitty gameplay. I forgive it for Jin's loincloth, but even that takes a ridiculous quest to obtain.

She looks kind of like a ten-year-old.

She's not human. She is a realian which is artificial life. She's modeled after the creators daughter who died at the age of 12.
Her age (as in how long she has existed) is listed as 14 and then 15 in the game manuals, though she permanently looks the age her creators daughter died.

That's just the style. In the art for Xenosaga 3, she looks about 14/15.

Same. I really liked her when I was a teenager and playing the game, but now that I look back I see she's just a loli fetish dream come true.

Also my kid self did ship MOMO and Jr., but yeah now I'm realizing the age and maturity difference.

I never really saw any of that reflected on HER, tbh. I was also older when the series came out, but all I really remember of her is that I really liked her as something sort of innocent in such a grim world (especially with Ziggy), and I HATED Albedo for his creepy pedo thing with her; it actually made me blindingly angry, and he was the first villain I can honestly remember in a very long while whom I actually looked forward to beating the ever-living shit out of (I remember the conversation with my TV going something like "oh you think you can beat me do you" "HELL YES BRING IT ON MOTHERFUCKERRR") so I actually think MOMO worked really well as a character and as a way to make the player honestly HATE the villain, which at a time of bishounen-anti-hero villains was really rare and something I appreciated.

Looking at it from all the angles mentioned (yeah her skirt REALLY does not need to be that short, we do not need to see her panties all the time, guys, come on), I can certainly see how others would see it as pandering to a very squicky demographic; but maybe it's just what you're looking for, or what you're conditioned to? I mean, if you see a girl in a short skirt and the first thing you think is "oh god here we go again", you're probably subconsciously looking to see if you're right, and that would color your memories of her character.

I feel you, OP. When I first played this game at age 12, I loved her, gleefully shipped Jr./MOMO, and didn't really see what the big deal was with the whole Albedo debacle. But when I watched a playthrough for it recently for the sake of nostalgia, I was seriously grossed out by how blatantly sexualized she is and the entirety of the Albedo segment was just horrifying and disgusting. I definitely don't ship Jr./MOMO anymore either, ugh. For that matter, all the Jr. ships I ever liked (the ones involving him with adults like Gaignun) are creepy as shit. This game is forever tainted with how it panders to pedos.
