Apparently it's considered racist now to call this an example of WTFJapan, but can we at least call it WTFotakubait? Even consciously animesque stuff like Skullgirls never gets quite as creepy in its sexuality as niche Japanese fantasy anime, roleplaying games and visual novels.

Don't like it, don't play it. It's the beauty of 2D, no matter how creepy or fucked up it is, no one is getting hurt or being degraded. So if it's not your kink, just ignore it and let other people fap to it.

Then sell it as kink. No one compares X-Change or Do You Like Horny Bunnies? to Final Fantasy or Trails in the Sky, but if it's sold as an RPG for a general audience, then it can be judged by the standards of that general audience.

Ar Tonelico is kind of amazing. On one hand, you have things like the gorgeous hymnos songs, written in a specially created language - and then on the other hand, you have cringeworthy elements like the crystal insertion/sex jokes. It's like the games were made by two completely different teams of people who barely interacted.

OP

I don't think I could've phrased it better, tbh.

That is basically the perfect description. Akiko Shikata is a ridiculously talented singer, and all the lore and such is amazing . . . do we REALLY need all the sex jokes/dating sim shit? I liked ar no surge because it seemed to get rid of the harem element at least. Also fuck NIS America for usually making said innuendos worse.

I'm so wary of playing these games for this exact reason. The art and music and what I've seen of the worldbuilding are beautiful, but I'm afraid of ruining them for myself if the actual plot/characters are too... inane otaku-bait.

It's a shame cause the worldbuilding is exactly my kind of thing. Magitech and musical magic are my faaaavorites.

For a musical style, try RahXephon. All the enemy mechs are controlled by creepy vocalist ladies singing.
(This is only tangentially related, I just have to shill Rahxephon :B)

tangentially related or not, I like mechas too, so that sounds worth checking out 8D

The first game, at least, had the theme of coercion being explored, including a reminder in the middle of the game along the lines of: 'You do realize that penetrating into these girls' most private and intimate places when they have no real option to say no is kind of messed up, don't you? I mean, it's something the bad guys are specifically shown as bad for forcing their subordinates into. You may be more gentle and at least vaguely getting consent, but it's still pretty skeevy.' (Or something like that -- it's been a while.)

Don't know about the other games in the series -- I heard they're less thematically coherent -- but at least there was an attempt to address it early on.
