I'm so wary of playing these games for this exact reason. The art and music and what I've seen of the worldbuilding are beautiful, but I'm afraid of ruining them for myself if the actual plot/characters are too... inane otaku-bait.

It's a shame cause the worldbuilding is exactly my kind of thing. Magitech and musical magic are my faaaavorites.

For a musical style, try RahXephon. All the enemy mechs are controlled by creepy vocalist ladies singing.
(This is only tangentially related, I just have to shill Rahxephon :B)

tangentially related or not, I like mechas too, so that sounds worth checking out 8D
