I've complained before about that fic with the dragons that everyone else instinctively bows down to, so have a bigger target: Friendship is Optimal. An AI is created to mimic Princess Celestia, and it basically takes over the world by offering people virtual realities where they can have anything they want. It has shit-all to do with My Little Pony aside from some character names and virtual quadrupeds, every character is one-note, the premise assumes the entire human race is stupidly easy to manipulate, and Celest-AI never comes off like the twisted genius she's supposed to be.

Interesting if unoriginal premise. Easy to screw up. Is it pretentious too?

I'm not sure if pretentious is the right word. It definitely takes itself very seriously and wants to say a lot of Important Things about how AI research will doom us all, but it never talks down to the reader or becomes a bland sermon. There are even occasional jokes. Mostly, it's just stupidly bleak and hopeless.
