Not a "omg this fanfic was so badly-written," but fanfics that actually offended/disgusted/disturbed you or otherwise pissed you off to the point where you would actually say you hate it.

I read a hate-fic for my favorite character. It wasn't labeled as such. It was basically a fanfic about how awful she is and making fun of her traumas and dismissing them. I was so pissed off I had to leave it.

I also read a fanfic where the author "mixed up" the events. Not even in an artistic way, it's like they took a cohesive story and put it in a blender. I was so frustrated that I had to quit that one too.

Like 80% of the fic on the SPN Kinkmeme. It offends, disgusts, and disturbs me. I've not gone on the kinkmeme in a year or so because of how gross it was.

I must be a broken record by now, but I've mentioned this several times: A DW fic where Rose raped and beat the Meta!criss Doctor and left him for dead to find the 'Proper' Doctor. All of it was a thinly veiled Rose bash and a set up for the author's pet ship (Doctor/Martha)

Narnia fic. It was quite long and started out really good. But the ending was so awful. It went in a direction that was just mean and shit upon a lot of the stuff that's in the Narnia books themselves - the reason lots of people would read the fic in the first place.

That would be fine if it had been warned for but it wasn't. The surprise of it, plus how terrible the actual ending was, was revolting.

I read a Sherlock Holmes fic that had Holmes and Watson writing each other sex fantasies in the form of letters. The last chapter I read before abandoning it had Watson jerking off to a fantasy Holmes wrote about the two of them cheating on Watson's wife -- you know, the one who DIED tragically young.

What is wrong with people. Did this writer NEVER once stop and think "wow, this is the most gross and shitty thing anyone could ever do, maybe I shouldn't portray the supposedly-sympathetic OTP doing it in this fluffy romantic fic like it's nbd?"

Read a fic recently that bashed my favorite character. The author made them wildly OOC and took a crush they may have had and some actions they may have taken (only shows up in one version of canon) and blew them way out of proportion in order to have an angsty fic all about their favorite ship. Said ship is canon, so it isn't like this character needed to be pushed out of the way.

I've complained before about that fic with the dragons that everyone else instinctively bows down to, so have a bigger target: Friendship is Optimal. An AI is created to mimic Princess Celestia, and it basically takes over the world by offering people virtual realities where they can have anything they want. It has shit-all to do with My Little Pony aside from some character names and virtual quadrupeds, every character is one-note, the premise assumes the entire human race is stupidly easy to manipulate, and Celest-AI never comes off like the twisted genius she's supposed to be.

Bungle in the Jungle. It's an HP fic (in second person, but actually pulled it off well.) What bugged me? The "Weasleys are all evil and Dumbledore is an evil mastermind." as well as what they did with Luna kind of annoying,

The sequel even more so because of the pot shots it took at canon. The most obvious "the canon sucks and this is better" I've ever seen. Even if I disagree with the canon making jokes about how the canon sucks seems like a shitty thing to do. If you think your fic is so good , let the fic speak for itself. You don't need to broadcast it in your fic that you think you're better than the canon and make unfavorable comparisons.

That one 400k nu!Trek fic that was recced everywhere back in 2010. I forget the title, but it was Spirk and Spock pov and each chapter was like a little episode. There was a lot wrong with it including terrible OOC-ness even for nu!Trek, but the chapter that finally got me was just a complete rip-off of the Firefly episode where Simon and River are kidnapped by space hillbillies and they want to burn River at the stake. I mean, I get homages. I do them in my fic. But, this just quoted the episode directly and followed the exact plot without acknowledgment that the chapter was "based" on an episode of a TV show.

I can't remember the title, and frankly I'm rather glad of that, but there was one ST:AOS fic I read that actually set off a panic attack. It was K/S/Mc, and it involved Kirk breaking off a relationship with McCoy because he'd realised from Spock Prime that Spock was his destined lover. Spock, in a fit of Vulcan possessiveness, violently tells McCoy to back off, and in the process accidentally creates a permanent mind link with him. McCoy actually does back off, I think to a whole other city, unaware of the mind link. Spock finds out that the mind link is permanent, unbreakable, and will kill McCoy unless it is completed in a soulbond. At this point Kirk realises that he still sort of loves McCoy after all, and he and Spock agree that it will all be better if McCoy joins their relationship, so he and Spock saddle up to go get him. McCoy at this point, and for what I think are fucking good and sensible reasons, no longer wants shit all to do with either of them, but he will literally die if he doesn't consent to be permanently bonded with them. Around the point when he tries to physically run after hearing this and Kirk physically stops him, while the mind link is busy crippling him and they're telling him that it will all be better once he stays with them, I had to go away and fucking hyperventilate for a while. I did not finish the story.

I found the fic on a rec list. Nowhere on this list or in the tags/notes for the fic itself was there any indication that this fic essentially involves physically and psychically railroading a guy, on pain of death, into a relationship he doesn't want with a) a guy who kicked him out because 'destiny' and b) the guy he was kicked out in favour of, who also physically and mentally violated him in a fit of jealousy. It was listed as romantic. What the ever loving fuck?!?

There were some other details thrown in, such as an alien species on the verge of death from a disease that only McCoy could cure, so that if he died from the mind link he'd be taking an entire fucking species with him, so he'd better hurry up and get busy. Christ on a cracker. Oh, and Spock Prime wholly approves of the mind link, because he loved his own McCoy too, and that's absolutely exactly the same as a forced mind link that will kill the guy unless he consents to be with two people who have abused him. Obviously!

I violently, violently hate this story. It sent me into a full-blown panic attack at the time, and I've never gone near it again, and I've no idea how it ends, because it is horrifying and I hate it so fucking much.

A Due South fic that took place during Fraser's childhood attending a residential school*.

Because it's not bad until it makes a pretty white boy cry. Because it totally could have happened to him!


*For those who are not Canadian, residential schools were like brainwashing jails for Native kids, which also included torture and sexual assault.

This godawful XMFC soulbond fic that was an AU designed around taking the Holocaust out of Magneto's backstory. Like in this one he's kind of moody and angsty because his mom died in a car accident. Because that's TOTALLY the same as the Holocaust, you guys.

If it counts -since 'Wicked' was mentioned'-, 'Mists of Avalon' (which is basically pro-fic of the Arthurian Legends). I had to read this for a literature assignment in high school, and I hated it. It was the most mentally painful experience I ever had with a book in my life ever, made even worse by finding out almost a decade later that MZB herself was basically a living monster.

As for fan-made fic, there was this one Mass Effect fic where someone wrote a F!Shepard/Thane fic that made Kaidan an outright villain (I want to say he kidnapped Shepard, who was pregnant with Thane's kid. Yeah, I wish I was making this up) and it was overall horrible. Just horrible. I'd read some badfic in my time, and the ME fandom was no exception, but that was by far the most cringiest, rage-inducing fic I'd ever had the misfortune of ever coming across. And I don't even ship Shenko or F!Shep/Thane.

The sad part was that it wasn't even a trollfic. The person who wrote it was serious about it and unrepentant when people called her out not just on how bad it was, but also lore errors (like making Feron the brother of Thane, for one), too. Which hey, their prerogative, but still. Ughhhhhhh.

Not mentioning the title, but one of the most popular fics in my fandom was about a sexual assault/almost-murder victim falling in love with their would-be rapist/murderer. Did I mention this all takes place in a mental hospital and their relationship is subtly encouraged by the victim's therapist? It was genuinely the absolute worst portrayal of how the mental health system works, and seeing all the people praising it, saying how sweet and realistic it was, absolutely baffled me.

I actually tried to read it TWICE just to make sure I was giving it a chance, and I couldn't get more than a few chapters in either time.

a terrible House fic called "Chrysalis" written by someone named gorblimey. it had one of the worst Mary Sues I've ever seen, who fixes House's leg with stem cells and is having simultaneous affairs with both House and Wilson (and amazingly, neither of them finds out) and steals House's sperm and impregnates herself with it, then has a miscarriage. Then House rapes her and she doesn't mind. The woman who wrote this godawful crap claims to have met Hugh Laurie. If she did I bet she scared the shit out of him.

In one canon-verse/timeline fic, this fic writer had a character who is canonically a nurse (in fact, since the show is newer and she's not in every episode, it is one of the only things we really know about her), have to look at a book or paper or something to figure out how to help another character's twisted ankle. Like, what? Did you miss one of the fundamental details of her character? That one just baffled me. I wonder why the author even bothered if they had no clue about this character.

There are not too many fics that I absolutely hate, but I've seen some that I have to roll my eyes at, especially popular ones. One popular Sterek BDSM AU is so weirdly against bisexuality that it feels like it was written in like 2006-era fandom. One of my fandom friends politely asked the author why she included the biphobic remarks, the author was an asshole to her, then in her next chapter, she wrote "I literally don't care about the mistakes I make, so don't correct me" in the author's notes. That one was odd.

There was one Sherlock fic I read where the premise was that as soon as Mary gave birth, John was going to take the child and leave her, while Sherlock and Mycroft blackmailed her into leaving and never coming back. There was absolutely no consideration for Mary in the fic - the second her womb was empty she was kicked to the curb, and the author made it clear both in the story and in comments that she considered this to be a just and fair thing to do.

Stargate: SG1 is by far my most hated fanfic. I'm if you're going to shit on virtually everything the movie did, why even bother?
