Fallout or Bioshock

(Anonymous) 2015-08-20 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Which series should I play first? I'm a beginner gamer and generally play on my friend's XBox, if it matters.

Ooo, this is a hard one. I love both series and they're very different (Fallout gives you much more freedom, if that matters to you; there are almost endless options) but I think I would suggest BioShock first because it's going to be quicker. You can probably get through all three BioShock games in half the time (Or less than half the time) it would take you to play a pretty complete Fallout 3 or NV game. The stories are also much tighter imo because of how linear they are, but the atmosphere is killer too.

Fallout IS great though, but it took me a year to beat FO3, and I only recently finished NV.

I agree with this comment.

I never even beat Fallout. I just play around in the world and kill things, mostly. I beat Bioshick Infinite in like a day and I'm not even close to what I'd even consider a "gamer."

Oh, wow, you finished quickly! I think it took me about a week... Maybe half a week. I tend to take longer than most people though because even in action games I find myself looking in every corner just in case I miss something. (Which makes playing Fallout painful and tedious at times.)

They are all much, much shorter though, and though there's a fair amount of exploring it isn't anywhere near the Fallout level. You could play Fallout for 300 hours and not do close to everything.

I agree with this comment. I'm a veteran player and FO3/NV/Skyrim still take me weeks. I'm a bit of an obsessive explorer, though, which plays a role.
elaminator: (Fallout: New Vegas (Lucky 38))

Weeks?! That still sounds like a speed-run to me...

I'm so fucking slow with Bethesda games. (Do you search every trashcan and desk you come across? Admittedly, that takes a long ass time so it's no wonder I take a year, lmao.)

I do! But to be fair I'll spend hours at a time playing, so in terms of actual days where I played them at some point it's rather short.

You're probably consistent too, so that helps. (Once you start you probably play till you finish.)

That's how I am with games that are not Bethesda. (Unless the game is bad or boring and I lose interest.)

For some reason I get to playing Fallout or Skyrim and I'll spend hours a day on it, for either a couple days or a week, then I'll take a few weeks off...or even a few months. (Maybe because there's so much to do and I want to complete everything, but I get overwhelmed and my obsessive nature of snatching up every piece of gold or lockpick I can find makes playing tedious at times.)

I never did finish Skyrim though. I feel bad about that 'cuz it's the first Elder Scrolls game I liked.
elaminator: (Fallout 4)

I liked Oblivion alright (what I played of it, anyway), but not remotely as much as Skyrim. I hated Morrowind so much I actually traded it in. (Despite getting jack shit for it.)

I haven't finished it either. Said I would after I finished Fallout: NV... I'm working on it. Slowly.

Morrowind is garbage.

If I could have actually killed anything I wouldn't have minded it as much; the combat was atrocious. Plus the setting, people and quests were bland.

But I honestly didn't even spend that much time on it and can't bring myself to feel bad about it.

I'm assuming you're going to skip Fallout 1 and 2, which is fine, they're not for everyone. But that leaves the question of what you want.

The Bioshock games are more straightforward; hewing close to their roots as System Shock spiritual sequels, the first two games have some exploration but you will be progressing from area to area until the conclusion. (Bioshock Infinite throws all this out for a CoD-esque linear clusterfuck, but the DLC sort of makes up for that.) They also make a pretty decent attempt at exploring some sociopolitical themes -- the first game is a pretty decent takedown of Objectivism and laissez-faire capitalaism, the second focuses a lot on the relationships of parents and their children amidst an examination of collectivism. And the third is some ham-fisted bullshit about racism and American exceptionalism that gets thrown under the bus for some stupid boilerplate sci-fi bullshit about alternate universes. (Again, the DLC fixes a lot of that. It's worth sitting through the main game once just so you can appreciate the DLC more.)

On the other hand, Fallout 3 and New Vegas and the upcoming Fallout 4 are very different. Whereas the original games were Ultima with guns, the new games are The Elder Scrolls with guns, with all the exploration, RPG elements, and game-breaking bugs that entails.

My advice is stick with Bioshock, at least until you get the hang of playing first person games.

dethtoll has a raging hateboner for Bioshock Infinite that just won't die. He probably should've seen a doctor for it years ago but what're you gonna do.

It's got problems but it's not anywhere near as bad as he makes it out to be. Also, most people have the opposite opinion of him and dislike the DLC, for what that's worth.
