I kind of agree, although I didn't really think about it that way before. I think it's the vocal expression and background music. It's so dreamy and wondering, and existential, like Davy can't really say exactly what he's feeling or put his emotions and thoughts into the right words, so his lyrics are all unfinished and rambling. Whereas John Stewart is saying almost exactly what he's thinking/feeling, and while what he's saying is more bittersweet than what Davy's saying, it seems that it's not as powerful or bittersweet as what Davy's feeling.

Does that make any sense?

Ooh, yes, that's a very good way of putting it. I especially like your point about the rambling lyrics.

I felt the Monkees' instrumentation and lyrics are cheery to an extent, but still ambiguous. Davy's vocals on the studio version really help (the live versions I've looked up sound happier). John Stewart's is more straightforwardly sad and wistful, so there's one less layer of feeling.
