I thought The Monkees' (album) version was more bittersweet than John Stewart's, even noting the different lyrics, or any of the slow/sad covers I found. I couldn't take the latter seriously.
Secret because this probably means my ears exist in another universe.

Wait, by "John Stewart" do you mean "recently retired from the Daily Show" John Stewart?!

The Daily Show person is JON Stewart.

John Stewart was the guy who originally wrote "Daydream Believer" back in the '60s.

da

Huh. I was thinking that if Jon Stewart did a tribute album to The Monkees, I'd be tempted to buy it. Mostly because he's so endearingly off-key when he sings.

Oh jeez, yeah. I think I was thinking that Jon Stewart was the African-American Green Lantern...

I kind of agree, although I didn't really think about it that way before. I think it's the vocal expression and background music. It's so dreamy and wondering, and existential, like Davy can't really say exactly what he's feeling or put his emotions and thoughts into the right words, so his lyrics are all unfinished and rambling. Whereas John Stewart is saying almost exactly what he's thinking/feeling, and while what he's saying is more bittersweet than what Davy's saying, it seems that it's not as powerful or bittersweet as what Davy's feeling.

Does that make any sense?

Ooh, yes, that's a very good way of putting it. I especially like your point about the rambling lyrics.

I felt the Monkees' instrumentation and lyrics are cheery to an extent, but still ambiguous. Davy's vocals on the studio version really help (the live versions I've looked up sound happier). John Stewart's is more straightforwardly sad and wistful, so there's one less layer of feeling.

Random fact, just because you used a Japanese album cover: an instrumental version of this song is played in Japanese 7-11's constantly. I have no idea why.

That's funnily appropriate. I think it fits 7-11 in a way. I always thought of convenience stores as a sort of dream world.

I didn't expect to see so many covers of that song by Japanese artists on YouTube. Some used Japanese lyrics, I wonder if they were direct translations? Also, something about the melody or the tempo or the piano parts makes me want to see it used in an anime opening.

Listening to them just now, I find I rather agree with this secret, though I might just be biased because John Stewart's voice annoys me
