I'm watching an episode of Law & Order. Lenny and Greene knock on the door of an apartment, and then comment that they know the apartment is empty (of all furnishings) from the sound of the knock. I ask my mom about it, and she goes, "Yeah, like you can tell if the mail's in the mailbox by tapping it. It sounds different empty."

Obviously I knew this for other small containers (tapping a jug of milk, for example) but I quite simply never would have considered an entire home sounding different when there's nothing inside the place.
