Today I learned that the swing ride you find at fairs and amusement parks can also go by the name "Yo Yo". I had no idea and still don't quite see the connection.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swing_ride

I also learned that if you ride a ride by yourself, there is a higher chance of getting hit on by the operator of the ride. When you don't like getting hit on, it's a bit disconcerting!

The most photogenic one is at Phantasialand, IMO.

I've recently learned the words Anatiferous (duck generating), Retromingent (an animal that pees behind them), Quaquaversal (going off in all directions), and Nepenthean (something which helps one forget their sorrows).

"Wretch!" I cried, "Thy God hath lent thee, by these angels he hath sent thee, respite! Respite and nepenthe from thy memories of Lenore! Quaff, o quaff this kind nepenthe and forget this lost Lenore!"

WTF that first word isn't in Merriam-Webster or any other real dictionary.

Why would Anyone need to say "duck generating"!? That word is little more then a pun.

Very specific but…

I was reading a biography on TE Lawrence and apparently, during the attack on Aqaba, he accidentally shot his camel in the back of the head, flipped off the darn thing, then lay on the ground reciting poetry convinced he was going to die.

And now I can't stop picturing this happening in the movie's depiction of the event and I crack up.

(Yes, I am Lawrence anon).

I ALMOST made a secret about this, but I controlled myself.

I have learned a lot about various serial killers. O.O

Less creepy, there was a messenger pigeon in WWI who survived being shot in the breast, losing an eye, and her leg to deliver a message that saved 500 men. She was awarded a medal for her service!

That is AWESOME. Did she die shortly afterwards or did she recover? :(

She was shot on October 3, 1918, Army medics were able to save her. She was taken back to the US and died on June 13, 1919 from her old wounds. The soldiers couldn't save her leg so they made her a peg leg instead!

The Canadian Prime Minister's Office under its previous (and somewhat current) staff was like The West Wing, if everyone on The West Wing had been unspeakably evil.

But I can't help watching the trainwreck....

I just found out that Harper has a personal groomer. I always wondered why he looks like he's wearing lipstick.

That even though I have health insurance, it's only good in my state. And many plans are like that. So you know, I can't travel in the country that I live in and be guaranteed medical coverage. And you can't buy travel insurance unless you're leaving the U.S.

There's usually coverage for emergencies. Not great if you're going to be away for a whie and might need routine medical care, but useful if you get hurt and need to go to the ER.

I'm watching an episode of Law & Order. Lenny and Greene knock on the door of an apartment, and then comment that they know the apartment is empty (of all furnishings) from the sound of the knock. I ask my mom about it, and she goes, "Yeah, like you can tell if the mail's in the mailbox by tapping it. It sounds different empty."

Obviously I knew this for other small containers (tapping a jug of milk, for example) but I quite simply never would have considered an entire home sounding different when there's nothing inside the place.
