I disagree. I do wish there were more m/m and f/f canon COUPLES in TV and movies (even ball-sucky couples), but I wouldn't ever want any of my m/m and f/f ships to become canon and be reduced to the bland disappointing godawfulness that plagues het ships that become canon.

+1

Exactly.

I would like both better balanced representation and for canon to keep its clumsy little hands off my otps.

Luckily, this is easily doable. Just have future characters be more diverse, and don't force complete character reassignments on the established ones for the sake of fanservice.

oh how precious of you.

Ha, I want one of my ships to become canon* because the meltdown and shitstorm that would provoke would be absolutely hilarious.

*this would never, ever happen

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I felt the same way in the past and my ship DID end up becoming canon. Instead of enjoying the ensuing shitstorm it was just terrible for both sides. The haters became even more hateful and the shippers just got stressed out and had to isolate themselves amongst each other.
Lots of people jumped ship because they didn't like how others were behaving or couldn't take the heat of their ship being criticized in the spotlight. Those that remained became so spiteful and it just made for a nastier ship war all around.

TBH, I'd settle for quietly shipping a ship in peace. I've had enough shitstorms.

:( I'm sorry it was like that for you.
In this case, it's just that there's already an annoying shipwar, and the big rival ship are incredibly smug about their "canon proof".
Also I'm not *too* inside the fandom at this point, so I think I would be entertained. But it would be simultaneously awful, yes. It's already pretty awful.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Which ship is that, if I may ask? 'Cause I have one of those myself. ;)

Haha, it's embarrassing, but Levi/Eren from Attack on Titan.
I mean it would be really messed-up for it to become canon, yes? But so hilarious.

I'm so opposed to my OTPs becoming canon, that I'd quit the shows were they to happen and have done so in the past. I know the writers wouldn't know how to handle my precious babies properly and secondly, I hate the entitelment from the fans that comes with the "canonization" of their fave ship. Jeez Louise, the obnoxious attitude. Non-canon ships FTW!

Grumbling agreement I guess.

I honestly would have to take it on a case by case basis. There are certain things I ship I'd love to be canon, others that would probably be better off staying fanon.

Yeah this is me as well, some of them are just much better left to fanon really(and my own imagination).

(Anonymous) 2015-08-22 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of my ships are crack or rare pairs so I know they'll never happen. However, I love all the canon ships in my number one fandom so I trust the author would be able to make anything work.

I'm on the fence about agreeing or disagreeing, mostly because the idea of my OTP becoming canon sounds appealing, but my OTP becoming canon and sucking balls would, well, suck balls.

On the other hand, how broad is the term of "it sucks balls" here?

I think most romances are lackluster unless the romance was the whole point of the story*. Korrasami was kind of tacked on, but it also wasn't the main point of Korra. I like my ships to be canon too, but I don't expect them to be amazing in canon most of the time. Usually they're just feel-good, fluffy and otherwise un-notable. Fanfic is still there for giving them lots of cool development.

*obviously this isn't always done well, but it can be

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
The canon ships in my primary fandom are incredibly dysfunctional. It's a rare relationship where one of them hasn't tried to murder the other.

If my favored pairing became canon it would be pretty bad news for at least one of them. I don't think I could take it.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who had two ships become canon the novelty wears off fast. Usually you burn out on that ship soon after it becomes canon and you'd likely grow to hate it because the fandom that canon ships attract. Not to mention canon ships attract a lot more negative attention and criticism.

I'd prefer a ship that has a nice basis in canon and that stays under the radar for the most part.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't want any of my ships to be canon because canon is almost always disappointing when it comes to romance (I'm mostly into comics and genre shows) but at the same time I really want to see more LBGT romance in media because it would have so great to see when I was a teenager.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Most of the time they do even the het ships badly. I shudder to think what they'd do with gay ones.

They should definitely try more often in future though.

Fave canon gay ship on TV ever is probably still Agron/Nasir from Spartacus.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I don't want my OTP to become canon because I don't think canon would handle it well, and I know the haters would double down on their viciousness and spite. They're already nasty enough, and I'd rather not deal with that.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I disagree, but a big part of that is because most of my ships have been het and therefore have become canon. My longing to experience that has been fulfilled, so I don't really need it anymore.

Besides, sometimes having things get in the way of your ship is a good scapegoat for the much deeper and more complex failings of a show. The show I'm currently fannish about is honestly pretty terrible at this point, and it's not really because the writers won't let my ship be together. The issues go a lot deeper than that and can probably be best summed up as "cheap story telling in every regard." But my ship gives me something to focus on; I can imagine what the story could be if my ship were written the way I want them to be, and that makes the whole thing seem worth salvaging.

Once a ship gets together, all the deeper issues stay, and instead of having this driving need to see the issues fixed so that your ship can be together, it all just becomes so boring.
