Internet "Scandals" That Weren't

(Anonymous) 2015-08-22 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
What are some internet "scandals" you can recall that ended up being blown out of proportion in hindsight? (Fandom or otherwise.)

Mine below (also as examples in case this isn't clear.)

Re: Internet "Scandals" That Weren't

- When a five year old dog attack victim was apparently turned away from a KFC in Missouri, and everyone left horrible reviews. Turned out to be a complete hoax.

- I'm not sure if this was actually how it turned out, but remember how Amazon ended up supposedly censoring gay literature years ago, and everyone got upset? IIRC they realized it probably really was a glitch because a lot of other books were censored/removed as well, and the issue was more bad PR because the person who responded to the initial query used a form letter of sorts. I think that's what everyone surmised once it blew over.

Pretty much this in regards to the Amazon story.

Lena Dunham-gate

Yeah no, she's still a shitty-ass person who deserves to be called out for her bullshit and the double standards that surround it.

She's not a rapist or a child molester, though

Yeah but it SHOULD have been one >:(

Wait, what happened?

Re: Internet "Scandals" That Weren't

Nothing.

Amy Schumer's got a much better claim on being a rapist, but we've all decided we like her and we don't like Lena, so whatever Lena's done is bad and whatever Amy's done is fine.

If this sounds like junior high school to you, you're not alone.

This is exactly my feeling about it.

Although I have convinced myself that Amy Schumer was joking with that story, for the sake of my sanity. But she still told an absolutely execrable rape joke.

But people decided they don't like Dunham's humor or aesthetic or politics or something, so.

It's just such an insincere thing.

She and Amy Shumer are rapist whores who should be stoned. End of Story.

MRAS HATE MAD MAX!!1!1 Except they don't.
And honestly, I love the movie, but that controversy seemed more like viral marketing to me.

Having met actual MRAs throwing a whiny fit over the movie, trust me, it's not viral marketing.

It probably wasn't a manosphere-wide phenomenon though.

I doubt it was as big as the media made it out to be, but there's definitely the nutty MRAs of that opinion.

The novel discovery that an old coworker on FB is one

The lady who said that people refused to top and wrote a nasty note because she was gay. They didn't.

Also the lady who said the same thing but about being black.

That's one reason alone call-out culture is dangerous, though IIRC no names were used in either case. But what happens if someone does use names? People's lives could be ruined for something they never did. O_o

That "relentlessly gay" thing.

Re: Internet "Scandals" That Weren't

(Anonymous) 2015-08-22 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
SO disappointed in that. Granted, it sounded kinda fake to me from the outset, but I was all prepared to adopt "relentlessly gay" as a fun label for my gay family, and now I kinda feel it sucks :/

Now I want my house to be relentlessly gay.

That big "twitter" argument between two singers a couple of weeks ago? Where tumblr and the media were all "THEY'RE AT WAR" but then it ended up being an exchange of like 3-4 tweets, one an apology?
