Fandom rationing

(Anonymous) 2015-08-22 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
When you're in a small fandom, do you ever ration your intake of fanfic/fanart/etc, in order to make it last longer?

Nah. No matter what it is, my interest will turn to other things after a certain amount of time (though I might return to an old fandom later) so doing this will just lead me to get bored before having enjoyed all the fanwork I could have enjoyed. If I binge and run out of stuff while my interest is still high, I'll get frustrated and be forced to lose interest that way instead.

This is kind of like me. Even if I absolutely adore something, eventually my interest in the fandom will start waning. (Usually either when the fandom slows down or the fandom disappoints me in some way. That can be because I've already read everything I want to and no new fic is coming in, the fanfic all starts to feel similar or there's too much wank and I need a break from it. It can be general lack of interest or burn-out, but often there's something paired with it.)

So I'm going to read all the fic and reblog all the art and gifs, because eventually something else is probably going to come along and catch my interest and I won't have time to be obsessed with both to the same degree.

I don't read fan fic (not that there's any fanfic worth reading for one of mine r/n), and I don't look at fan art unless another friend of mine -who's also into the same fandom- reblogs it.

I find it better to space things out these days (especially since I'm starting to focus more on working on one of my own original stories), rather than binging all in the span of a month or two, give or take how much material is out there.

No. I read whatever I want and if I want more fanfic, I'll get into a new fandom. I also reread my faves probably hundreds of times.

God no, I consume it all at once and then mourn.

Not even a little.

I'd rather just read my faves over and over and over. And how would I know what my faves are, if I don't read everything?

No, I plow through it all and then get sad when I run out.

Yep. I knew it was a dying fandom so I started rationing the good stuff early on. I wish I'd started earlier, maybe there would still be a few good stories left for me to read for the first time.

No, but I also don't mind rereading fics I enjoyed over and over again.

I blew through all the fanfic I could find for a ship I have in a relatively small canon in a few days.

Most of my fandoms aren't that small, and now I'm like "...now what?"

Nah. I'm not the sort of person who needs fanworks to spur my enjoyment of a canon. Fanworks do add to it, but even if I'm the only one that ships something, I'm not too miffed since I'm quite happy since a large part of my enjoyment of fandom is contributing rather than consuming. So when I get into a new small thing, I just read everything at once and then start doing my own thing.

Besides, I'm greedy and impatient.

I supplement with other fandoms. My most common fallback fandom is HP.
