Steven Universe (warning for rape)

[personal profile] feotakahari 2015-08-22 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
There's an anime out right now that I haven't watched, but have heard people discussing, where the premise is that censorship actually worked. Japanese youth have no knowledge of sex, even in a reproductive capacity. They still have sexual urges that they don't know how to handle, and they have no framework for the concept of sexual consent, so they do things that are really creepy and rapey because they don't understand that it's wrong.

I've seen a lot of discussion of forcible fusion in Steven Universe as an analogue for rape, and what that means for characters like Peridot who're completely unfazed by it. I don't think they're necessarily bad people. From what we've seen, they come from a background of near-total ignorance about fusion, and ignorance of consent may be part of that.
