I know how people feel about OCs and especially self inserts in fandom.

But after lots of RPs with friends, where we made personas/fiction versions of us in different fictional settings that turned out pretty cool I wonder why people don't try this more often. Not for interacting with canons(we avoided the canons as much as we could) so much as exploring the setting and its possibilities. Maybe even develop headcanons of the worlds through doing it. About how people might do things somewhere else in that world and stuff.

I don't think people should be embarrassed of writing things just because it's viewed as automatically bad and immature or unpopular by other people or has a bad reputation.

I've known people (including my own siblings) who considered fanfiction itself to be obsessive and weird or embarrassing before they learned more about it.

Also FFS people should make fun of people because they wrote a Mary Sue at some point. Nobody starts out perfect.

The problem is when they never stop writing them, or they never acknowledged anything wrong with their characters even when given good concrit about the problems.

I like OCs for the same reason! Sometimes there's just parts of the setting/mythos you can't explore with canon characters for whatever reason and I like theory-fics. It's good fun.

I think RP is a lot more forgiving of OCs (and OC Stand-Ins) as, if you're an even half-decent player, you end up learning what works and what doesn't pretty quickly.
