I don't think it's just Star Wars fandom... This kind of thing happens all the time with media. It isn't always sudden, though it can be.

I'm not even saying people are always wrong, either; sometimes I agree. Sometimes once the shine and excitement fade away you realize this thing you were so into is flawed or disappointing. I felt that way about ME3 (no, not even just because of the endings); didn't stop loving it, just realized it wasn't as perfect as I originally thought.

But I feel like this film would've had a better chance of being accepted if someone other than JJ were at the helm. I even like the Star Trek reboot, but that's clearly an unpopular opinion and a lot of people are angry at him touching another beloved franchise.

I'm just going to wait and see. Frankly, as much as I loved Star Wars growing up, I won't be heartbroken if this film isn't good. In the end I'll be okay with just ignoring it. (Like I do with Indiana Jones and The Crystal Skull.)
