Nah, they were the internet's punching bag before gamergate. Somehow basement dwellers, misogynists, fedora wearers, and atheists got rolled up into some weird stereotype.

guess it's just a fucking mystery. not at all because there's substantial overlap in those groups. there's no way we could speculate on that.

(also a reminder that whenever someone uses 'atheist' in this way, they mean a very specific subset of atheists) (which may not be polite or correct but it's important to understand how it's factually used)

I was never under the impression that this was about atheists as a whole. It's about homophobes who happen to be atheists as opposed to homophobes who are religious.

My comment was only about the former group, and their ilk (the "evo-psych" thing applies to many MRA types as well, for example).

Yeah, totally.

I commented above about stupid fucking atheists into ev psych shit, and I am a lifelong atheist. Some of the way some of them act like atheism is a fucking gold-plated licence to be a bigot is infuriating.

What's extra frustrating about it to me is that evolutionary psychology, as a subset of evolutionary biology, is actually really interesting and not without its merits. It gets bad when people use it to make gross generalizations and excuse bigotry and vile behavior. :/ and that makes me sad.
