I'm finally writing fic again and I am so happy. I knew classes starting would jumpstart me.

I always had that when I was in school. I wonder why that is?

Re: Writing Thread

I started writing again after a years-long dry spell and managed two drabbles that focused on the most disliked, least popular character in my fandom. I got no comments, no likes, no nothing. I mean yeah I picked Unpopular Character to write about, but still. Kinda discouraging, especially when I struggled for those 200 words lol.

still, well done, OP. sometimes you have to build up a readership

Which fandom, which character?

Re: Writing Thread

I just posted a bunch of stories. I wrote 2 for other people. 1 is getting decent traffic but the other one isn't, and I'm not sure if that's just because it's longer or if it sucks or I just need to be more patient or what.

I've also uploaded a super rare pairing. My kudo/hit ratio is good but very few people are looking at it. I've just not had that kind of thing happen yet. I'll admit I'm still figuring out where to set my expectations on AO3.

And my last fic is the first fic I'm doling out by chapters. I just uploaded the newest chapter and now I'm waiting anxiously to see what people think.

Question

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I just received a random comment. It is about the fic. It's not douchey. The commenter just notes their surprise at a turn of events in the fic.

How would you reply to that?

Re: Question

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd say "well then it was successful!" or something. Implying you're talking about something that was meant to surprise people. Even if not a jokey "I meant to do that actually" could certainly work.

I need to get back to writing my series. My motivation is shot.

So I'm almost finished a WIP only two people ever reviewed, and looking at the quality of the unbeta'd chapters (my beta quit on me two chapters in), it was... well, it wasn't awful, but it really wasn't my best writing overall. And it's definitely hard to finish it. There's a lot of continuity issues, which is to be expected. A lot has remained exactly as I planned, but a lot of things changed as well - a background character ended up having a much larger role, for instance.

In any case, it's a bit... depressing's the wrong word. I don't know what the right word is. I guess I just don't know what to do with it. I'm torn between just finishing it off and letting it go, or getting a proper beta reader once I have the last chapter. I've also considered spinning off the minor character I mentioned - she's basically an OC as we only ever hear about her by name, and even that was in a post-canon interview with the author. So I'm hesitant, although the canon character she's with is important in the canon series, and his search for redemption is important in my fic. Plus, my other main characters are so minor they're as good as OCs themselves.

I don't regret writing it - it's been fun, and I think once I do finish it off, it'll also be easier for me to actually finish an original WIP. I've learned a lot about the sorts of things I like to write. Just not sure what my next step is, if there is a next step.

I joined a group writing thing for one of my fandoms, even though I hate group projects, because I needed the excuse to branch out from my comfort zone. We have a marvelous idea, but the person whose turn it is to write doesn't even check the documents anymore, and I don't want to be the one to take the initiative and tell them hey, you have to either write or pass. I'm the only male in my group, I'm afraid they'll think I'm being pushy by trying to get them on the schedule we need to be on to finish.

I wrote an M/M smut recently and maybe its too early but I guess I'm just surprised it didn't get the same reaction that my F/F one got. Not disappointed mind just...surprised.

And part of me is wondering if it's because I did something wrong. But eh I suppose I'm overreacting.

i wrote like... one fic at the beginning of the year, and keep getting kudos on it. so i guess i must have done something right?

but i can't bring myself to publish anything else. i don't know why.

I'm writing a sequel to my latest book, which one of my editors was super enthused about getting. All good. I was in a really good flow, wrote six chapters in a couple of weeks which is really fast for me.

I know exactly where I want to go. I know exactly what I write. But I just got hit with a block and now writing it's like pulling teeth and I have no idea why.

I know when I had block, it was because I realized I didn't know who some of my characters were. Sometimes writers block may be because you know where the plot goes but you don't fully understand who your characters are,

That's been the case with other things I've written. Usually short stories. But I don't think so with this one.

It's possibly stress since I have a lot going on in my non-writer life, and I've had bad insomnia lately which is affecting my concentration. Annoying because I usually write when I can't sleep!

I know my block in writing right now is that I'm worried that because of a handful 'meh' reviews on my debut novella will prevent people from having any interest in anything else I write. :[

Re: Writing Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not the case at all with any of the writers I've seen in similar situations, if it helps any.

A book that sold poorly or got negative reviews doesn't prevent an author having success with another book. Readers look at the premise of something way before they acknowledge anything else, so don't feel too bad. And meh reviews happen to everyone, even bestsellers.

What's it about?

Re: Writing Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
The first book is an M/M BDSM erotic romance, with a shy and restrained character learning to be a Dom.

The sequel which I'm writing now is about him and his sub negotiating their new relationship, and dealing with relationship problems. Also tying up some loose ends from the last book.

Have you reread your first book recently? Maybe that'll help, if you're not too insecure in your writing and it can help your novel either way.

Re: Writing Thread

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, reread it four times in the last month. It's currently in the editing process so I could recite it in my sleep. Which is a good point, actually. It may just be burnout.

You know how some fantasy novels are so overly grim and angsty? I'm having the opposite problem; everything I write is too happy.

Bad things have happened and do happen in the settings, but it retains the cheerful tone.
