I never really got into SU, and dropped it when they showed how horrifyingly creepy Pearl's relationship is with Steven. (Ohhhh little boy, sometimes I wonder if the woman I wanted to bang can see me through your eyes! How cute!) That and the constant crying and angst is just so tiresome and boring.

I love how unflinching this show is about Pearl's issues. She's desperately lonely, she has no idea how to function without someone higher-ranking telling her what to do, she'll lie and manipulate others to get them to act as an emotional crutch, and she has a near-suicidal desire to die in battle to protect someone she loves. The last few episodes saw her finally going far enough to alienate the other Gems, and while they've patched things up enough to function as a team, I suspect we haven't seen all of the fallout yet.

I guess that's my problem with it, it's not fun. Gravity Falls isn't all sunshine and roses either, but I actually like the characters, and they aren't constantly being pricks to each other/other people and crying/being depressed all the time.

I can see where you're coming from. For me, the fact that it's ultimately a kids' show is enough of a restraining bolt--they always have to approach these things in ways kids can understand and learn from. Pearl is never going to reach a point where she has no hope of getting better, because the show uses her as an object lesson for how to deal with negative emotions and stop letting them overwhelm you.

I don't understand why that's creepy? Of course you can make anything creepy when you phrase it crudely like you did, but it's basically the same as any parent saying they can see something of their child's other parent in the child. "You're so much like your mother sometimes I can't believe it" and such are pretty normal things for a parent to say. It's actually kind of creepy that you'd connect that to them thinking about banging?

It's complicated. Pearl definitely has issues, and there are times when she seems to confuse Steven with Rose or resent Steven for being alive when Rose is dead. But she's the closest thing he has to a kind and gentle authority figure who's regularly involved in his daily life, and she does her best to help him most of the time. Steven and the other gems have called her out when she went too far, and it seems like she's on a path to deal with her problems.

Because she didn't just say "I see so much of Rose in you". She flat out said she sometimes wonders if Rose can see HER through him. That coupled with the fact that she watches him sleep at night? Yeah, that's creepy.
