I started watching GF first and really liked it. Then I watched SU and as much as I hate to admit it, I have trouble getting back into GF now, it just feels so... basic. But it's still a great show!

I'm the opposite; I started with Gravity Falls, and I love it, and want to know more, but I cannot get into SU. I've tried, but it just doesn't work. I do keep up with the world building, just because tumblr, but I can't get into the show itself.

Same here.

I tried both when the hype was first rising. I liked GF a lot, found it accessible. SU I found weird and dropped.
Now everybody's talking about it, so I'm giving it another try, but... it's so difficult for me to get through.

I love Gravity Falls but I just can't get into SU. I want to, but it freaks me out and I find it weirdly disgusting. Should I keep watching? I've only watched like 10 eps.

The episode where he had cats growing out of him freaked me out so hard. So much body horror.

Yes, that was nightmarish, I don't know how much of that I can stand.

Steven Universe is a VERY slow burn. It starts getting serious in episode 13, has its first episode in a different style at 25, and shifts completely over to that style at 50. I think season 2 is worth it, but all that little stuff is relevant in order to understand it, so there's not a lot you can skip. (At least the episodes are only 11 minutes.)

I like both, but I'll be more likely to catch Gravity Falls as soon as it airs since that's a much rarer thing. Both are also subject to cartoony behavior, but they're also shows that draw inspiration from their siblings, which I always find cool--Sugar's brother was Steven's and Mabel is based off of Hirsch's twin sister Ariel, including the sweaters.

I also think Soos is supposed to be based off of Pen Ward, but I'm not as sure about that last one.

Soos is based off a former roommate of Alex's.

Aw, that's cool. Thanks for the clarification!

Based ON, not "off of"

I never really got into SU, and dropped it when they showed how horrifyingly creepy Pearl's relationship is with Steven. (Ohhhh little boy, sometimes I wonder if the woman I wanted to bang can see me through your eyes! How cute!) That and the constant crying and angst is just so tiresome and boring.

I love how unflinching this show is about Pearl's issues. She's desperately lonely, she has no idea how to function without someone higher-ranking telling her what to do, she'll lie and manipulate others to get them to act as an emotional crutch, and she has a near-suicidal desire to die in battle to protect someone she loves. The last few episodes saw her finally going far enough to alienate the other Gems, and while they've patched things up enough to function as a team, I suspect we haven't seen all of the fallout yet.

I guess that's my problem with it, it's not fun. Gravity Falls isn't all sunshine and roses either, but I actually like the characters, and they aren't constantly being pricks to each other/other people and crying/being depressed all the time.

I don't understand why that's creepy? Of course you can make anything creepy when you phrase it crudely like you did, but it's basically the same as any parent saying they can see something of their child's other parent in the child. "You're so much like your mother sometimes I can't believe it" and such are pretty normal things for a parent to say. It's actually kind of creepy that you'd connect that to them thinking about banging?

It's complicated. Pearl definitely has issues, and there are times when she seems to confuse Steven with Rose or resent Steven for being alive when Rose is dead. But she's the closest thing he has to a kind and gentle authority figure who's regularly involved in his daily life, and she does her best to help him most of the time. Steven and the other gems have called her out when she went too far, and it seems like she's on a path to deal with her problems.

i feel completely opposite with these two series although i started them at the same time. eventually, i chose gravity falls because they felt more relatable and i've liked mysteries/paranormal stuff more anyway :\

I prefer SU to GF too but saying everyone in the show except Dipper is basically equivalent to Onion feels reeeaally extreme, lol

I enjoyed GF... Couldn't get into SU and with the turns it is taking don't think I could stick with it if I got into it.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah but like the other characters in GF are comedy characters. They're written in a way that plays up the humor. It's apples and oranges.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 08:08 am (UTC)(link)
I started Gravity Falls first and got into Steven Universe later, and found it harder to get into, though I now like both.

GF caters better to my thirst for mystery and is exactly the brand of weird and creepy that I loved in the cartoons I watched as a kid. SU starts off a little weak in the areas that appeal to me as an adult, but builds up to a very compelling story arc and Cartoon Network seems to be less restrictive a master than Disney, so SU has that going on for it too.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 04:34 pm (UTC)(link)
SU is boring and way, way overrated. The characters are annoying and one-dimensional, whereas Gravity Falls has some excellent plots going on.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 06:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds like you dropped SU early in, which is a shame. Its plots have become much more interesting and original than GF's.
